An extremist green revolution is spreading its seeds on an international scale, and, whether one condones or condemns the means of eco-fanaticism, the results are sprouting up everywhere.

Black History Month

For the third time in Humanitas Afrika's history, we invite you to take part in the celebrations of BLACK HISTORY MONTH. An exhibition of photos, workshops and theatre performances, films, dance and music productions and more, will take place from 30 October to 4 November 2006 in Prague and Pilsen.

The programme will start on Monday 30 October at 6 pm with the screening of a black African film from Ghana: Love Brewed in an African Pot (Kino Atlas, Sokolovska 1, Praha 8, 2 min. from Florenc metro station).

Prague Post Playwriting Contest

In an effort to rejuvinate English-language theatre in Prague, The Prague Post is launching what will become an annual theater event. The Prague Post Playwriting Contest, which will feature an elite panel of judges that include former United Artists President Norbert Auerbach and Samuel Beckett collaborator and co-author, Barbara Bray.

It is hoped that this competition will inspire a new wave of creativity in the Czech theater community, showcasing the prodigious talents of Czech and expat writers in the Czech Republic.

Blitzkid has been around for almost 10 years and is finally garnering some well deserved recognition from fans and critics- especially in Europe. On October 27 they start their third European tour as part of the Hell Nights Tour with The Rezurex, The Other, and Bloodsucking Zombies- a wickedly delicious line-up of phenomenal bands. November 5-25, they tour with The Rezurex, bringing their special brand of horror rock to Eastern Europe for the first time as well as introducing material from their new album Five Cellars Below to German audiences.

There is a muse at work in the fanaticized object. Something which draws us to it for reasons divorced from practical concerns. The fanatic nature of the relationship empowers us to give ourselves wholly over to the object without the fetters of conscience, discretion, analysis or self control. We all long for an object such as this; something through which the full measure of our expression can plunge to its limit and approach the boarders where we are united with or severed from the universe. Has any one ever been in love who doesn’t relate to this condition? To really be in love with another person is and should be the most fanatic condition of all.

If Elmer Fudd were a vegetarian he might say “Shhhh! Be vewy vewy quiet, I’m hunting mushwooms. Ehehehehehe.’ Elmer Fudd is a fictional character but mushroom hunting is a bona fide activity that is quite popular in various regions of Europe. Meandering through a forest in search of wild mushrooms is a well-established tradition in many Slavic cultures. The sport, if you can call it that, is also practiced in Nordic and Baltic countries.

Someone once told me American universities outside the United States are bad news. I didn't think it concerned me because I planned to study in the “land of the free.” However, in the summer of 2002, I began studying at the University of New York in Prague as a communications and mass media major.As someone who'd spent her life attending international schools (I am Croatian but I grew up in Libya), constantly surrounded by people from all over, I wanted to find a university that offered cultural diversity. UNYP, billed as a university that offers an American education in the heart of Europe and boasts students from 60 counties, seemed perfect.

The newest film from “world music guru” Simon Broughton, a visually stylish and compelling study of the leading contemporary exponent of the classic urban music of Lisbon.

Fado is the urban music of Lisbon, a sort of blues that derives from the fishing culture of Portugal and its empire in Brazil and with Africa. In this inventive and engaging documentary, Simon Broughton traces the history of 20th century Portugal by using the shifting role and perception of fado as a main device. Mariza is herself an emblematic fadista, as she was born in Mozambique and effortlessly combines the traditional and the contemporary.

Tonight (October 12) at 10:05 Czech Television 2 will present the greatest horror film of all time, The Shining, as part of their Stanley Kubrick Film Month (and half) . It will be played in the original version; English with Czech subtitles. This is just in time for Halloween! Invite your Czech friends over and let them be frightened to death.

It’s 3 a.m. on a Saturday at Valentino, Vinohrady’s popular gay nightspot. Through flashing strobes and mirrorball beams, clubgoers gyrate to thumping Madonna, Cher and ABBA beats. The room is a vortex of gaudy fashion, exposed sinew and bountiful testosterone. Cocktails are sipped; lustful glances are caught across smoky tables. Given the brazen atmosphere here at Valentino, you might well expect Prague to rival Europe’s other queer meccas such as London, Paris and Berlin.

When one goes on one of one’s rambles, one doesn’t always have the time one wishes to devote to exploring completely one’s destination, something one complicates by not stopping at an ATM before boarding Tram 1 in the direction of the end of the line. In the immediate vicinity of Vozovna Kobylisy, one will realize upon arrival, there is no obvious way to make a withdrawal. This is a bloody shame, as one would have picked a sunny day to make the trip, and the outdoor drinking at Občerstvení na Konečně (Refreshment at the End of the Line) would make one drool.

Labeling the Czech education system linguistically and culturally ethnocentric is perhaps too bold, but, argue the existing infrastructure limits Romany children’s ability to complete primary education, and you’ll get an approving nod. It’s a system that plunges them into a cycle of poverty and low achievement. With most Roma having only completed primary school, they are sentenced to an average of 69 Kč an hour; with a high school education, the earning potential is almost double.

The current situation presents a double-rail system dichotomizing basic education into ordinary primary schools and special remedial schools characterized by high numbers of Romany children. The situation is, however, not clear-cut, and complexities arise as schools employ different programs that diverge in curricula, eventually creating less-demanding, predominantly Roma classes.

No matter how rewarding, the acquisition of a foreign language is always a lengthy and, at times, painful process. The perils a learner encounters on his journey are numerous, starting with the two-pronged problem of pronunciation: unfamiliar intonation and strange, sometimes utterly unpronounceable sounds. For an English-speaker endeavouring to learn Czech, for instance, it is vital to intimate that the language s/he is attempting to master puts the stress on the first syllable of words endowed with semantic (rather than grammatical) meaning (or on the monosyllabic prepositions preceding them). Of equal importance is the mastery of the individual sounds (or “phonemes”) that the language in question is made up of. One may be surprised to realize that even those sounds which appear to be identical to English ones are actually pronounced differently (consider the pronunciation of p and b in English and Czech) – a fact that gives rise to the phenomenon of a “foreign accent”.
