Art on Weekends at The Scandinavian House Saturdays, 3-5pm Zlatnická 10, Prague 1 By Jessi Tabalba
The Scandinavian House, the cultural center for Scandinavian countries (including Finland and Iceland), is truly bustling on most weekdays, especially at lunchtimes, as Cafe Nordica, with its reasonably priced menu, has become popular with New Town's student crowd. But the Scandanivan House is more than just an eatery. I come on a Saturday, and I'm not here for meatballs - I'm here for the Scandinavian House's Art on Weekends oil-painting class, which aims to exhibit the most hopeful projects at Cafe Nordica.
As the class begins, the students, who vary widely in age, background, and artistic experience, are guided through the basic techniques of color-matching and oil-painting by American artist Julianne Ingles. After receiving our assignment (to draw a design and then fill it it with coordinating colors), we set to painting. Later, our works (some unfinished) are displayed in front of the class for some friendly evaluation by our fellow pupils. It was easy to forget the electric humidity and overcast gloom outside while filling a canvas with fat brush strokes.
The classes at Art on Weekends are a marvelous way to spend a Saturday afternoon. If you'd like to join, e-mail Helga at
