Prague Fringe Festival LogoPrague’s flagship Fringe Festival is using an online petition to battle funding cuts which have affected cultural organizations city-wide.

The festival, which is based on the renowned Edinburgh Fringe, faces considerable down-sizing on last year’s festival as it goes into its 7th year. Due to run from May 25 to June 1 the Prague Fringe spans theatre, comedy, dance, music and film.

Eight million Kč funding cuts to non-profit art organizations were announced in December. The cultural community were left in pensive suspense until March when City Hall announced the extent of the cuts and the organizations which would not receive any funding.

Fringe Festival was one of these and, despite four embassies lobbying on their behalf, they still need more support which you can give to them in the form of an online petition (see below).

Founder and producer Steve Gove said: “It was a shock. It seemed so out of the blue to be told ‘no’ and for no reason — especially so early in the life of this fast-growing event before we could stand on our own feet.”

Arts community leaders will present the petition to City Hall during a demonstration on the morning of April 24 before an assembly meeting is due to take place.

To sign the petition follow this link.
