In the small serene little town of Svetvinčenat, Croatia, the Dance and Non-Verbal Theatre Festival will come alive for the seventh consecutive year 21-25 July. Situated in the inland of Istria, Svetvinčenat is the perfect setting for the festival, offering a unique combination of beauty and art.
Initially, organizers were aiming to dislocate modern dance from the capital of Zagreb and create a Mediterranean dance haven, the meeting point for dancers, dance lovers, and artists. With tremendous success for the past six years, the festival has changed the image of contemporary dance in Croatia, opening up a space for international cooperation of artists and performers and creating a forum for the exchange of ideas and projects.
Sandra Babac, Head of Media and Promotion, offered much insight into the atmosphere of the festival. “In one word, it's beautiful, but there is so much more than that. It's enthusiastic, charming, relaxed, educational and very positive. During the day, Svetvinčenat is quiet and always sunny, with a Renaissance castle dominating the scene. As evening approaches, people gather from all over to experience the performances and plays, and the town itself is transformed into a magnificent stage.”
Performers ranging in age from 7-107, with different backgrounds and interests, will welcome approximately 3,000 guests to the festival this year. Hotels nor hostels exist in Svetvinčenat, so accommodation is provided in the homes of local citizens. According to the festival's organizer, people are overwhelmed with the friendly spirit they encounter and leave feeling like one of Croatia's own.
