Prague's theatre community is uniting in protest against financial cuts which threaten to end current shows and have left long-term plans in ruins.
City Hall representatives have cut funding to cultural organizations throughout the city which has hit Prague's theatres hard with a reduction in financial support for non-profit activities and ticket subsidies.
Actors, associates and audiences of six of the city's theatres (the Švandovo, Divadle v Dlouhé, Divadlo Na Zábradlí, Divadlo pod Palmovkou, Studio Ypsilon and Městská Divadla Pražská ) will meet in protest at the City Hall, Marianske namesti, this Thursday (April 24, 8.30am).
The group intend to raise a number of issues, via a petition, including developing a clear definition of public cultural organizations, examining cultural policy and questioning the cultural councilor, Ing Milan Richter in depth. They will also look at speeding up a resolution to the conflict the funding cuts have instigated between City Hall and Prague's cultural community.
The petition further seeks the "separation of substitution of non-profit sector from (the) possible substitution of cultural business of general subsidy for tickets."
