Restaurants Shamed by Rebelling Water Drinkers!

by Alex Jordan

The last decade's ultimate useless fashion statement (drinking bottled water) is finally on the decline in the Czech Republic.

    * It's environmentally unfriendly. Vast amounts of CO2 are produced by flying water around the world.
    * It's expensive. The economic crisis, growing environmental awareness and probably fashion trends have caused it to dawn on us that we can get free from the tap what we spend hundreds of koruna on in bottles.
    * It's pointless. I've yet to meet anyone who can tell the difference in taste between bottled and tap water.

Voda.cz and its supporters are also suggesting that tap water is about as healthy as the bottled sort, after all, it hasn't been left in a warehouse for months before you drink it. Czech restaurant owners are now coming under pressure to serve tap water with meals. Enraged by paying for their environmentally unfriendly water, Czech diners have started to name and shame restaurants who refuse to serve tap water. You can join in at voda.cz, where's a wealth of water related information.

PETA rebrands fish as 'sea kittens'

by Alex Jordan
based on an article by Katherine Liew

ImageRecently, PETA decided that 'fish' didn't have a cuddly enough image and decided to label them 'sea kittens' instead, thinking that fewer people would eat them if they did that.  We tried. We really tried to write a funny introduction to this link. But after reading the material from PETA's website we lost all hope of coming up with anything more amusing. (At least I did, and I was the person writing it...there's my effort, ten lines down).

Despite our suspicions, there's no evidence that the site (peta.org) containing the following quotes is a hoax...

Escape for your mind, soul and stomach...

In Seven Easy Steps!

By Jessi Tabalba

   1.      Make sure you're hungry. You'll be preparing a honey-garlic glazed stir-fry, so select a frying-pan's worth of meat, tofu, veggies or old Converse shoes.

   2.     What did you choose? Note that many of the world's major religions forbid their adherents to eat certain foods. As you cut the meat, veggies and/or tofu into 2.5 cm chunks, ponder the reasons behind these dietary laws:

Judaism: Jewish dietary laws are based in the Pentateuch, the five first books of the Old Testament, especially Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Rabbinical study was essential in keeping the Jewish faith whole during the centuries of diaspora, and the kosher edict of not eating cheeseburgers comes from a Midrashic interpretation of “thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.” (Exodus 23:19)

The Unreal World of Absinth

By Phil Williams

Escape reality with the Green Fairy, the potent drink that promises such clarity you’ll see things that aren’t even real. Absinth is famous the world over as more than a drink, for causing fits, hallucinations and the dreaded absinthism addiction. Associated with warping the minds of a wide range of 19th Century artists, from Oscar Wilde to Vincent van Gogh, from its origins in France to its settling in the heart of Bohemia (where its final 'e' is dropped), just how dangerous is this typically bohemian tipple?

Potato Salad for the Soul...

I saw it on Fox News so it must be true. Apparently a Florida couple (he's a Bishop, she's a Pastor. It's a match made in...well...you know) have found an image of the crucified Jesus in a potato. The image, which to us looks like a Photoshop hybrid of the Shroud of Turin and the towering Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro, was first noticed by Pastor Brewster's grand-daughter after the good pastor had thrown the potato away, mistaking this literally blessed food for just another rotten spud.

Indian Restaurant Offers Graveside Seating

Courtesy of Kansas City.com

AHMADABAD, India | In India, death is a part of life — and, at one restaurant in western India, a part of lunch.
The bustling New Lucky Restaurant in Ahmadabad is famous for its milky tea, its buttery rolls, and the graves between the tables. It’s a spot where old men page through newspapers and argue politics in the morning while young couples share candlelit meals and hold hands at night. That the candles sit atop graves only adds to the ambiance.
