The Fight for Funding

By Kimberly Hiss from the Prague Post

Desperate for action in the wake of municipal funding cuts, the city’s nonprofit arts groups are intensifying their fight for grant money. On April 28, the Prague organization Initiative for Culture met to identify upcoming strategies, including the continuation of a petition, and the planning of a May 29 demonstration to further raise awareness about the the dire status of the arts in Prague.

The meeting followed an April 24 rally in front of the City Hall building on Marianské náměstí, during which demonstrators first delivered their petition calling for the creation of a cultural advisory board and the resignation of Milan Richter, city councilor responsible for culture.

The rally coincided with City Hall’s monthly assembly meeting, and drew an estimated 400 demonstrators, who started arriving with signs and banners at 8:30 a.m.

“It was a very clear statement of our argument,” said Šárka Havlíčková, artistic director of the Alfred ve dvoře theater, and an Initiative for Culture board member. “We had to loudly say what was true because there is such a damaged picture of the situation in the media.”

by Catherine Park

Prague Christmas fever officially starts on December 1st – that's when the Christmas markets open its stalls to the wandering crowd, and the scent of grilled sausages and roasted chestnuts mingled with the fragrance of fresh-cut wood, mistletoe, and evergreen tree fill the air.

Prague is one of the most visited places in the European Union during the Christmas season; the demand for hotel rooms is much higher than the capacity of local hotels – over 100,000 tourists are expected to enjoy holidays and celebrate the New Year here. Culture Clash/Festivals

From a culture that curiously revels in apathy and insignificance comes a strong reminder that when opportunity knocks...thou hast two choices, and only one of those will be worth remembering. This year The Czech Republic’s prodigal son was called upon to voice a statement of the entire E.U., David Černý and his cohorts gave them the sculpturally sarcastic, if not caustically amusing statement; Entropa.

It is Instigator Media Group’s mission to level the playing field via making fun and targeting every aspect of every country's culture. Supporting the selfless / self-centered right of freedom of expression and the burden of enlightenment that comes along with any cognizance.

Currently on display at DOX gallery (and on tour all summer), Provokátor spoke with artist David Černý and DOX co-founder and director Leoš Válka about Entropa, and opportunism.

“It’s a provocateur, it would be difficult to find something more provocative.” Válka notes, answering our query about the sculpture of stereotypes and whether exploitation is a characteristic of Czech culture,  “I’m not sure about opportunistic, I think there is a streak of opportunism in the Czech psyche, and artists are generally opportunists by trade.”
So it’s [the artist] responsibility to seize the moment, “carpe diem”.

'The Purple Octopus' Essay Plan: Jan Kaplický

by Alex Jordan

Introduction

Following the death of the celebrated Jan Kaplický on January 14th, his followers have renewed their attempts to push forward his design for a new national library in Prague. The building would look like the picture on the right, only bigger. Provokator sketches the argument.

Jan Kaplický was a Czech architect who was exiled in 1968. He won an international competition to design a new National Library for Prague in 2007, but local politicians opposed the jury's choice.

Public Transportation - strike?

intro by Kate Pinto

Aww you gotta love Prague in January!
Negative temperatures all the time, slippery black ice looming on the corners (I'm still to find out if this black ice phenomenon is just the result of the mix of snow, dirt and salt or just frozen dog droppings... either way, you might break a leg if you step on it and that's always more pleasant than having feces on your shoes), even the sunlight seems to have migrated to the south. Anyway, we know that this scenario is very pleasant but hold on your yawps - there's other news on the horizon that we're sure will please you.

Transport employees (might) go on strike!

Isn't this great? Now you can enjoy the negative temperatures and the black ice to its fullest capacity because there's the possibility that in the next few days you will have to move around by foot.

Free work out and a personal heating system (dress in layers) with a very low environmental impact at the same time! Leave your real fooprint behind - not just your carbon copy!

Tongue out *who among us just bought their monthly Metro pass?  hint: they're sticking their tongue out.

A Devil Without a Horse

By Hannah Straw

Letna Park is a tip-top site for skate-boarders, with underground regional competitions taking place by that poignant memorial to the only constant in life- time itself- immortalised by the mesmerising and rhythmical swinging of the metronome. In a setting where time and speed are ubiquitously and triumphantly linked in one elegant movement, mere mortal passings seem insignificant and slow.

Now imagine that scene, but with time sped up to an almost ludicrous degree and set in Der Vaterland. That's what German motorists had to witness and contend with as a daring skateboarder hurled down a steep stretch of motorway reaching death-defying speeds of 100km/h after hitching a white-knuckle ride holding on to the back of an unsuspecting lorry.
