Czech court awards two women compensation for illegal sterilizations

Two women who are no longer able to bear children as a result of operations performed on them without their permission have been awarded hundreds of thousands of Czech crowns by the High Court in Prague. David Záhumenský, chair of the League of Human Rights, which is representing the patients, announced the news in a press release to Romea.cz today. Some activists say dozens of women, most of them Roma, have been sterilized without their consent in the Czech Republic, but precise statistics on the phenomenon have not been gathered.

Sziget Festival @ Budapest

*Lily Allen (uk), The Offspring (us), La Fura deis Baus (sp)

Every August, hundreds of thousands of Euro kids make the pilgrimage to Budapest’s leafy Old-Buda Island for a musical gathering of Buddha-size proportions. Hailed as “the most colorful, biggest and cheapest festival in Central Europe”, Sziget hosts more than 1,000 performances, with this year’s line-up including main stage acts like Lilly Allen and The Offspring. What makes Sziget special is its wide range of entertainment that includes a World Music Stage, Rock Stage, Party Arena, art exhibitions, classical music, jazz, and even a stunning performance each night by Barcelona’s La Fura deis Baus which features a “macroshow” of dozens of spinning acrobats and a three story tower with giant wheel. Enough said.

July 9th

Start: 20:00
End: 23:59
The newly opened Pilot Bar and converted theatre hosts this trio of Czech ska/punk rock/soul bands in Prague 10 on July 9th at 8pm.
The evening consists of the musical gang bang by Super Pilot, a band whose motto says it all: “Dirty rock for your dirty soul”, keeping true to their unique mix of punk and dirty folk music.  Your eardrums won’t have a chance to recover before the Disco Balls, a local group offering up an eclectic mix of ska, soul, and surf music breakout their tunes.  And don’t forget about The Blind Daters, a band that claim the inspiration for their alt-rockin’ style comes from bands such as The Clash, The Stooges, and the Misfits.

Baltic Indie from the Woods

Vaiko Eplik & Eliit (ee), Ocean Versus Daughter

29.05.09 @ Strahov 007, 19h/ 100 By Flanna Sheridan

Hailing from a country of approximately one million residents perched atop the Baltic, chances are you haven't heard of Vaiko Eplik & Eliit. This is real indie rock -- this guy lives in a cabin in the woods with his wife and baby and produces his own music. His country loves him, and they know a thing or two about music. In 1991, Estonians gathered at an amphitheater in Talinn and belted out national songs to rid themselves of the Russians -- and it worked. Be sure to come and hear what artistry made the Ruskies run along with the rest of the crowd.

Stuff That Doesn't Suck 02.05-06.05

Saturday 02:  Church of Confidence (de), The Grit (uk), Pipes & Pints (cz/us) @ Exit Chmelnice (20:00)

Founded in Berlin in 1995, Church Of Confidence combined Punk and Rock’n’Roll, just to find out, that with this mixture they were way ahead of their time.
With their latest album “Takin Over”, they continued to combine late 70’s Punk Rock, early 70’s Glam-Rock and the wild energy of their 50’s Rock’n’Roll heroes, creating their own style, which as the album title implies relates the most important decades of underground rock: The Clash meet The Slade meet Gene Vincent. Pipes and Pints is more than a band. It’s a concept; Punk-rock and Highland bagpipes!
Their live act is an ass-kicking experience that will certainly lift up your mood and make your heads bang without even realizing it.

Health (us), Fiat Eno (cz) @ 007 (20:00) promoted by A.M. 180 Collective and Bohemian Like You

Health is an experimental band consisting of four members including Benjamin Jared Miller, Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Jupiter Keyes. All are from different cities including Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles, but their current home base is Los Angeles. Jake met Jupiter in college. John met Jake in a guitar store. Jared was drawn to the fold by way of Internet courtship. The band is oftentimes considered noise rock, but besides having some slight elements of the genre, they don’t fit the sound of other, current bands included in the noise rock scene, due to them mixing such genres as dance and electronica.

Ocean vs Daughter

an informal chat with Flanna Sheridan

by Antonio Baroni

When you hear Flanna Sheridan's sweet and velvety voice opposed to the waterfall of vigorous piano-raindrops and the colourful, warm and thunderous violin and cello flows, suddenly the mysterious name of the band makes sense: their music is like a wide expanse of water that can be sometimes quiet and sometimes stormy, nevertheless the sound is always clean, defined, and it's not hard to imagine Flanna as one of the Nereids, the nymphs that accompanied Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.

And all that is good, and better that Gay Beast studiously avoids aural polish. There is a nice film of filth on this recording. If this is how they sound live: Wow!" -SS (Z-Gun http://z-gun.org)

Banks Prepare for Big Bonuses, and Public Wrath

Everyone on Wall Street is fixated on The Number.

The bank bonus season, that annual rite of big money and bigger egos, begins in earnest this week, and it looks as if it will be one of the largest and most controversial blowouts the industry has ever seen.

Bank executives are grappling with a question that exasperates, even infuriates, many recession-weary Americans: Just how big should their paydays be? Despite calls for restraint from Washington and a chafed public, resurgent banks are preparing to pay out bonuses that rival those of the boom years. The haul, in cash and stock, will run into many billions of dollars.

"I’m not a fan of Sunshine".  I could confidently say this before the evening of the 24th. Not stemming from a dislike of their music, but simply from indifference owing to my expat's lack of local knowledge.  So I allowed a friend to attempt to convert me.  I’ve attended several concerts at Lucerna Music Bar; local and international bands and never quite seen such a large crowd of excited fans.  So we got a drink and sat back to wait for the opening group: Dead Pope’s Company.
