Laurie Amat of the Residents performs her showcases Sex, Love and Duels as well as the experimental silent documentary Man with a Camera.
Sex, Love and Duels is an aggressive, sensual, and at times cacophonous improvisation duet with vocalist Laurie Amat and “ChaosMusic” pianist Mirek Vodraska. The idea of “Humanism” expressed in the piece changes constantly. Both Vodraska and Amat use their full bodies in expression, creating a kinetic and visceral sound and visual experience. The relationship between the performers builds unity and discord with a dynamic tension which lasts far beyond the last note.
Her Man with a Camera performance is the European premiere of California filmmaker Alphonso Alvarez’ remix of the experimental 1926 Russian film. The live soundtrack performance combines amplified voice, taped industrial sound, woodwind and found percussion. The use of pure voice and machine sound is a reflection of the personal and impersonal world of the film that is sensuality expressed in the melodic and the dissonant.
