Love great films, cold beer and being outside every night of summer? Look no further than the three-month open-air movie-festival on Prague’s own Střelák island. The festival is already underway; it opened on June 7th with live music and the Czech comedy Gympl, but don’t fear, it will be running every night until the end of August.

For its twelfth-year, the festival comes courtesy of The Cinematograph of the Čadík Brothers, a company dedicated to bringing mobile cinema to towns across Bohemia. The brothers have come a long way since first trekking across the county brandishing films on the back of a wagon, as this host of goodies should show.

Films are being shown almost every night on Střelák island, opposite the Nadroni Divadlo/National Theatre and below Legii Most. Shown every night at 9pm during June and July, and 9.30pm through August, the range of films on offer is immense. Besides numerous Czech classics (most with English subtitles), there is also a range of international titles: there’s the recently acclaimed, (No Country for Old Men , 122mins, 2nd July), old classics, (Midnight Cowboy , 113mins, 13th July), new blockbusters, (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull , 123mins, 2nd August), and some alternative gems like Bollywood’s Swades: We Are The People/Our Country (210mins, 15th August). Tickets cost 100Kc.

If this selection isn’t enough, there are regular musical offerings covering all genres from French ska (Les Ejectes , July 10th) to Irish pub tunes (The Hogs , 12th August), usually accompanied by related movies, whilst this weekend the island hosts part of the United Islands of Prague festival (June 20th-21st). For refreshments, a selection of Černá hora beers and lemonades are on offer: what more could you ask for on your summer nights?
