According to Webster’s, torture is the infliction of intense pain to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure (they forget to mention masochistic pleasure).  With all the negative press torture gets, most would stop short of ever considering administering it a developed skill, an art form if you will.  The administration of pain to meet an end other than simple abuse or death requires creativity, technique, and an understanding of psychology and physiology.  It is quite simple to beat a person until they bleed, pass out, or expire.  It is another to tease/torment to bring about contrition, confession, or orgasm (the mention of orgasm is not intended to disrespect those who have suffered abuse, but because BDSM culture is relevant to torture and an art).

The artisan of torture is cunning, insightful, resourceful- knowing no two victims are the same- getting inside the head to break the body, noting every flinch with the removed demeanor of a scientist or the glee of a sadist.  The artisan knows the importance of patience- build fear, timing- right type of pain at the right time, and connection- knowing the subject as they know themselves and impervious to the pleas.

ImageWhat is it that makes torture so effective?  Two of the most important components are anticipation and the fear that comes with it.  This is not the “what did I get for Christmas?” type of anticipation, but the “what the hell is going to happen to me?” anticipation. Most nonconsensual torture is carried out by governments with the intent of gathering information.  The goal is to inflict so much pain and terror that the victim yields.  Upon yielding, the victim may or may not be allowed to live. There are fates worth than death and this realization is powerful.  In a consensual situation, it is different.  The fear is not as pervasive because they know their life is not at stake, but the anticipation is just as pervasive- the thrill of testing boundaries and the promise of gratification- the master molding them like clay.

Perhaps, Webster’s should alter their definition of torture to  “skilled and effective infliction of intense pain….”
