How has your April Fools' day gone? Mine was crap. I forgot about it until 3pm and after 12 noon the joke backfires on you, so doing something immature was out of the question. I went to work and messed around all day writing this article and exchanging bitchy e-mails instead.

There's an art to constructing a good April fool. Some of the best are constructed by newspapers. They usually ask or provoke readers to provide comments or send in letters/names/addresses/bank details. Banana skins and fake soap don't have the same edge, and if you can get the people you're trying to make idiots of to do most of the work themselves whilst you sit back and cackle gleefully  - it's by far the most effective method of operating. Australia seems to have done one of the best jobs so far this year, easily outstripping the French poisson d'avril and displaying far more sophistication than Beijing's randy pandas. The results of the British broadsheets' efforts usually become apparent a few days after the first when readers' responses reach the letters page.

Through my status as a modest film buff, I know that there are what society-at-large would call ‘good movies’. Tragically excluded from this cannon are most movies about freakishly large, dangerous animals that somehow get genetically or bionically enhanced by scientists/the military/nature gone wrong.

What I never expected, was that these movies might predict… the future. A future that has just become… the present…
A freakishly gargantuan, 10 foot long endangered crocodile was run over in the Florida keys, presumably following a lengthy chase sequence and the deaths of several cheerleaders.

Unlucky vendors selling heat-rub massage oil at the "Big Eropolis" near Paris (argued to be the worlds largest sex fair by it's fond advocates), are finally feeling the economic heat. Sales figures have drooped. During the past decade's period of economic growth there was expansion in the French sex toy industry, but the heavy impact of the global recession has finally made customer spending impotent throughout the sector responsible for kinky power tools, fetish footwear, and merkins. The girth of the problem is such that customers who previously wet their lips at the prospect of buying a piece of plastic to put in themeless, (or that special loved one), now show a coy shyness more associated with a blushing teen making their first rookie purchase as part of a group dare.

This downturn is seemingly counter-intuitive to some industry insiders, seeing as recessions usually lead people to find more personal recreational fun. Hey, how you doin'?... ;)
... maybe people realised they can use their natural anatomy, and don't need to spend 1000Kč on a fake penis when so many real ones are floating around in peoples trousers. I know mine is.

Provokator notes this is Friday the 13th!!! Oh my god! I just shat myself... a bit went on my black cat.

While this date has a certain significance to some superstitious folk, it's just a normal day for almost everyone - EXCEPT IN 2029 when we will see a 320 metre wide asteroid close (closer than geosynchronous satellites, such as the ones that make the GPS on an iphone work) it will be visible to the naked eye in Africa, Asia and Europe! Its so large that if it were to collide with the earth it would make a crater the size of Texas.
 
Ok, obviously it's not going to hit otherwise you'd have heard more squawking than this, but for a while (from Christmas Eve 2004) astronomers claimed the chances of it doing so were a mere one in sixty. As it is it will whizz a mere 30,000 km above (? below? next to?) the earth, (unless we're unlucky and the calculations were wrong...).
It *might* hit again later (like 2035 or something) though, if its trajectory is changed by earth's gravity in 2029. To be honest, no one knows, and it's all going to be very disappointing for the apocalypse crowd... however, to be able to see something come that close to hitting us and miss (visible with the naked eye) is actually a 1 in a 1000 year opportunity! It's going to be so bright that you'll be able to see it even from the middle of a large city -an IFO (identified flying object) bigger and brighter than any seen in living memory. Mind you, it'll probably be really, really cloudy.

However, floods be damned, its gallery is not only back up to speed, but hoping to expand rapidly through its new Artist in Residency program, which was launched in October 2007. This program offers a haven for international artists, who are invited to house themselves and their art in studios on site. A board of professional artists, including the locally and internationally acclaimed David Černý (responsible for those weird baby sculptures climbing up Prague’s television tower), offer their critique and advice for works in progress.
