I Had a Dream...Glen Beck Reversed his Lobotomy

This is a message from Martin Luther King Jr.'s son:

(...please are you stupid f*cks with your tea-bags up your arses, grow a brain. Stem cells might not be a bad idea.)

Martin Luther King III:
Forty-seven years ago this weekend, on a sweltering August day often remembered simply as the March on Washington, my father delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial. A memorial to him is being erected at the Tidal Basin, not far from where he shared his vision of a nation united in justice, equality and brotherhood.

This weekend Glenn Beck is to host a "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial. While it is commendable that this rally will honor the brave men and women of our armed forces, who serve our country with phenomenal dedication, it is clear from the timing and location that the rally's organizers present this event as also honoring the ideals and contributions of Martin Luther King Jr.

I would like to be clear about what those ideals are.

Sziget Festival @ Budapest

*Lily Allen (uk), The Offspring (us), La Fura deis Baus (sp)

Every August, hundreds of thousands of Euro kids make the pilgrimage to Budapest’s leafy Old-Buda Island for a musical gathering of Buddha-size proportions. Hailed as “the most colorful, biggest and cheapest festival in Central Europe”, Sziget hosts more than 1,000 performances, with this year’s line-up including main stage acts like Lilly Allen and The Offspring. What makes Sziget special is its wide range of entertainment that includes a World Music Stage, Rock Stage, Party Arena, art exhibitions, classical music, jazz, and even a stunning performance each night by Barcelona’s La Fura deis Baus which features a “macroshow” of dozens of spinning acrobats and a three story tower with giant wheel. Enough said.

July 9th

Start: 20:00
End: 23:59
The newly opened Pilot Bar and converted theatre hosts this trio of Czech ska/punk rock/soul bands in Prague 10 on July 9th at 8pm.
The evening consists of the musical gang bang by Super Pilot, a band whose motto says it all: “Dirty rock for your dirty soul”, keeping true to their unique mix of punk and dirty folk music.  Your eardrums won’t have a chance to recover before the Disco Balls, a local group offering up an eclectic mix of ska, soul, and surf music breakout their tunes.  And don’t forget about The Blind Daters, a band that claim the inspiration for their alt-rockin’ style comes from bands such as The Clash, The Stooges, and the Misfits.

Interview with the Eagles of Death Metal

Federalists of Death Metal?

By Marika and Martina Čermaková

IMG had 3 pre-arranged phone interviews with Jesse Hughes, from Eagles of Death Metal.
Miffed but not maligned, we showed up at Lucerna for the fourth pre-arranged interview and scored.  However, we missed the show (due to the utter unbelievability  that the venue would prefer to run an 80's nite over a concert).

M: (describing the methods and intent of Provokator.org Map-a-zine) It's a pretty socialist idea .
J: The form of socialism I love.
M: As opposed to...
J: ...the form of socialism I truly don't love.
M: Which is...
J: I'm a conservative.
M: I find it really interesting that you are a conservative.
J: I'm an old-fashioned—more of a federalist.
M: Did you actually write for some of the Republican conventions?
J: I wrote public speeches—don't know if you can call them Republican-- yeah.
M: How did you finesse them to make them sound more...

While Zs' music has been variously categorized as no-wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, it is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs aims to create works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time, evoking unspoken past, present, and future rites and ritual.

Helter Skelter Hostel Review

Helter Skelter Hostel
a review by Laurie Bossard

Well almost 5,000 people are friends with someone named Henio Zytomirski – a polish boy who died over 60 years ago.  Henio was born in Lublin, Poland in 1933 and was killed at the age of 6 with his father in a gas chamber during the Holocaust. THE NAME OF THIS GIRL IS OLIVIA ANNA LIVKI is a one-woman-show (no other musicians on stage but myself). For the first time ever, the show brings both my musical and visual mind-dimensions together, into a complete Livki-universe. It tells the stories of eight smart maverick-girls: Fat mice on a wheel in a cage. The invisible intern, the smiling student 4063989. Run the wheel without jumping off, or going anywhere. She can’t believe that’s the only way. She refuses to believe that crystal-therapy will help against her sleeping-disorder. That Satan is 33 and lives in Tel-Aviv. She hates being google-mapped.

Queen Zinfadel: A Short Story

Provokator goes high art as we present a short story by Garrett McNeill...

Her voice slid through the silence like an epidural needle. Any tension felt by those sitting in the room began to evaporate. Alcohol wasn’t working. Every eye-lash pointed towards her. The thing about anesthesia is it produces a sense of unreality and detachment from self. Absolved of identity, the room became a vacuum wherein the pulsating inflections of her voice were clung to by the rest in fungal acceptance.

ism (us) @ Chateau Rouge
Like a kindler, gentler Nine Inch Nails, New York's ism--lower case letters, please--have constructed a debut that's equal parts alternative and industrial. It's also big, bold, and dramatic. Singer/guitarist Andre Mistier, a Yale grad with a degree in comparative mythology, describes the group's inaugural effort as an exploration of "the animal and organic versus the technological and inorganic." (He's joined by Gerard Toriello on guitar, Leigh Battle on bass, and Mike Higgins on drums.). Seeing them play live is an intense and inspiring experience. Do yourself a favor and don't miss that concert!

Witches Night Review

Where: Kampa Island, Petrin Hill, Dvorce, and many more locations
When: The last night of April
Attractions: Bongo players, Fire poi, bag pipes, bonfires, umm….and pivo

The origin of this celebration is debatable, but the tradition is not: big burning bonfires, grilled sausages, witches swooping around, and folks dancing to tribal drums and bagpipes. Pálení carodejnic ("The Burning of the Witches") takes place 30 April every year. The origin of this festival seems to be a brewing concoction of traditions and cultures.

Crash Course in Addiction

By Stephan Delbos

The plan was deceptively simple: get addicted to alcohol and cigarettes as quickly as possible, ride high for two weeks, then drop the bad habits like....well, like bad habits, and write about it all before press time. But to quote Jello Biafra, the infamous (and ironically, staunchly anti-drug) role model of thousands of crack-addicted gutter punks, "Every theory has its holes when real life steps in”.

The first problem was getting addicted to alcohol. While I have certainly never been averse to a few martinis with dinner, or lunch for that matter, my ability to stomach large quantities of alcohol diminished in direct ratio to the increasing length of my hangovers. When, ten days into the experiment, I woke in an empty night tram covered in ketchup, it seemed like the end of the line; a good time to quit this portion of the experiment. Luckily, I was blessed with a strong constitution. Two days of cold sweats and nausea in a darkened room had me good as new.

Although there were many performances to watch and note, Herbert Weixelbaun and Bud Melvin stood out the most.

Tracy Gang Pussy (fr) at Rock Cafe from 19:30

It all starts in 2002 in Paris, when Revlon, a guitar player in love with Scandinavian Rock & Roll and US Glam Rock, decides to found the first sleazy punk band in France. It takes nearly a year of searching in Parisian streets and shabby strip clubs to find the right people who will become Tracy Gang Pussy. They soon record 2 demos and start touring in bars and small clubs of the French Capital. The "Can't Stop That Rock n'Roll" tour begins with the GIVE IT A NAME festival with bands like AFI, Jimmy Eat World, Enter Shikari or Aiden and goes with more than 60 dates all around Europe (Scandinavian, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Poland...). TGP is now looking for a new record deal that can make them heard as loud as they deserve... Hide your daughters, hide your girlfriends, the sleaze invasion's coming to your town.

Contrast and Stasis in Jindrich Streit’s Photography

Streit’s dominant subject is life in Czech villages, particularly those in the Bruntal region, where he lived for some time. His photographs capture Czech villagers in a variety of moods and activities - work, rest, mourning and celebration being some of the more obvious themes of Streit’s work.
