This summer’s edition of Brutal Assault, Czechia’s self-proclaimed “music festival of extreme art,” could very well get out of hand. With over 50 extreme metal acts slated to appear at the outdoor festival in the small town of Svojšice u Přelouče over the course of three days, one thing’s for certain: it ain’t gonna look or sound pretty. But then again, who wants it to? Considering the excessive quantity of summer DJ wank fests for E-popping technohippies, isn’t it time for something a little more, well, extreme? Festival organizer Tomas Fiala thinks so. Having successfully brought together a roster that includes everyone from grindcore pioneers Napalm Death to regional heavyweights like Depresy and Ador Dorath, we were eager to listen to his thoughts on organizing this most famous annual Czech metal festival.
What kind of action can visitors to this year's Brutal Assault Festival expect?
The same as in the previous 10 years. They can expect great metal music, great beer, and a lot of different things which are involved on every good festival. In general we wanted to arrange some kind of extraordinary metal event. So we will see the turnout. Will Mayhem be flinging pig heads into the audience, like at some of their previous gigs? If so, will they be Czech pigs or Norwegian pigs?
Man, I do not guess so. No pig heads at all. As there are some vegans involved in the festival organization, it wouldn’t make any sense. This is not what Brutal Assault is gonna be about. It´s more about the music itself.
What are the psychological after-effects of a three-day-long Brutal Assault?
Banging your head throughout the entire journey back home... he he. But it really depends. In general people are more calm because they have experienced their darkest feelings through music, so it´s gonna be a calm season for almost another year. Do you have any personal recommendations for this year's Brutal Assault fest?
Of course I do. Check out crazy Carnival In Coal who are mixing death metal with Jamiroqui and some other craziness. Next, French Gojira is really overwhelming music, somewhere between Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad and Morbid Angel. Ephel Duath plays jazzy avant-garde but they are coming from metal origins. Of course I could also name the most important headliners like Dimmu Borgir, Fear Factory, Morbid Angel, Gorefest, Napalm Death…All these bands really deserve your attention coz they simply kick ass.
