by Alka Merlin These days, it's the skate fanatic's time to gloat. Following this year's Mystic Skate Cup that took place in July on Štvanice Island, skateboard fans had little to be happy about after the Prague City Council sent an eviction notice to the organizers warning them that they had till November 30th of this year to vacate the premises. .
According to the city council's eviction notice, the Mystic Skate Park broke the terms of its contract during the skateboarding world cup by exceeding the noise limit and using more space than was initially agreed upon in the contract "[Mystic Skates owner Tomáš Řejman] put forth a petition to have the eviction stopped," says Valerie Fischerová, a Mystic Skates representative. "We put the petition on our web pages, skate parks and other skate shops. Also, Volcom helped us greatly by putting the petition on their web page. We got 4,000 signatures in total." The park also got support from different media outlets including Radio Wave which aired an interview with Řejman. As a result of this, the Prague City Council sat down with Řejman to discuss the current situation.
"The meetings with the council helped improve the communication between us and them," says Fischerová. The council decided to put forth funding for the new bowl as a sign of its support of the skateboarding community in Prague. Until next summer, skateboarding fanatics can improve their ollies, backside 180's and 50/50 grinds under the brand-new roofing system, which was constructed to allow skaters to enjoy their favorite pastime during the winter as well.
