We will miss Sommer Chambers greatly. She left Portland, Oregan for Prague in 2004, as many before her, to find herself and explore, but ultimately it was her altruistic behavior that will be remembered best. Sommer was not one to simply preach her ideals. She was one to take action. As an English teacher she touched the hearts of many, especially children, in whose education she specialised in. Sommer donated much of her time to animal welfare and volunteered in a local cat shelter, often taking sick kittens home over the weekend to care for them. In the winter of 2005 she organised a successful clothing drive Prague's homeless. Even several classes of disadvantaged Roma children in Kosovo can thank her for devoting one summer to their education and well being in 2005.
Eventually, Sommer felt is was time to move on and to the dismay of many of her friends and colleagues she moved to South Korea. A new country, but the same Sommer. While teaching over 100 eager Korean children a week she found time to establish the Seoul Cat Rescue. She wrote articles to promote animal welfare and traveled long hours to visit shelters and spend time with needy cats and dogs, always returning home with an empty wallet.
In her short life she was able to see a lot of the world. In return, she gave a lot of herself to it. We could use more people like Sommer Chambers in this world.
Sommer, we hope you found that peace you were always looking for.
