* A hero or heroine usually fulfills the definitions of what is considered good and noble in his or her originating culture. Some scholars place the willingness to sacrifice the self for the greater good as the most important defining characteristic of a hero. However, in literature, particularly in tragedy, the hero may also have serious flaws that lead to a downfall.

* Hercules, one of the Greeks’ favorite heroes is known for his tremendous strength and courage. A hero indeed, he killed lions, hydras, giants and a multitude of other threatening beasts; helped Jason find the Golden Fleece; reinstated rightful rulers to their thrones; the list goes on. But he also killed his wife and children, bedded anything that walked, cross-dressed, and sacked innocent kingdoms in fits of egoistic rage.

* On June 27, 1950, Milada Horáková was executed for fabricated crimes against Czechoslovakia. On trial with 12 other activists and subjected to tortuous interrogation, she was the only one not to confess. She remained calm and resolute during the whole trial.

* According to Kim Jong II and his North Korean droogs, he has allegedly written more than 1,000 books and six operas and designed a tower to commemorate his father.

* Dustin Diamond, better known as Screech in Saved by the Bell, has been spotted starring in a porn film engaging two women in various combinations and positions as well as executing the dirty sanchez. So far Diamond says he is unaware of such a tape but does not deny there could be one.

* Devout Republican Anne Coulter's self-proclaimed hero is the late anti-commie crazed senator Joe McCarthy.

* Pretenders front woman Chrissie Hynde played in her first band with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, with whom she attended the Kent State University art school. She was also present at the infamous Kent State shootings in 1970.

* Child educator and life counselor Fred Rogers wore sneakers so that he could play the television theme song on the organ then run in front of the camera to put on his grandma-made cardigan sweaters without a sound.
