Trenčín 18 - 19 July 1099 - 1699 www.pohodafestival.sk Slovakia’s premiere music festival began in 1997 when 140 tickets were sold but 2,000 people rocked up to watch four Slovak, three Czech and one Russian band play. Pohoda, which means easy (chilled) in Czech and Slovak, now attracts serious names, The Pixies appearance in 2006 arguably being the high point thus far.
For some eclectic Pohoda pre-sounds, listen to Pohoda Radio on the festival website and acquaint yourself with headliners and local talent alike. Prague rockers The Prostitutes have been getting fanmail from Slovaks since signing up for the festival, and they are just as excited: “Fact is that this is one of the most acclaimed, biggest and most important festivals in the region,” explains guitarist Martin Destroyer. “Expectations are higher that the Sun!” And the sun shines hotly on the expanse of airfield that has been home to the fest since 2004. So go take it easy in the fields of Slovakia, and witness a slice of true rock n’ roll as The Prostitutes play Friday night in Moravské Budějovice, Saturday at Pohoda, and then leave immediately for a 9pm slot in Austria. “36 hours, 1100 km, 3 festivals, 30 degrees, 8 guys, one van, no AC. I was always bad at chemistry,” Martin admits, “but this definitely could explode.”
