Exit of Thuggsy Malone types triggers indie club comeback
By Jill Kushman Leading Prague indie-music scenesters have announced their return to club Bordo – for a big Halloween concert – after the apparent resolution of recent hassle involving guns, violence, and money. Promoter Nick Jennings launched a boycott of the sublimely seedy underground hangout in February, after being assaulted by Bordo thug-personnel who suddenly demanded a cut of the entrance fees during one of Jennings' "Panika" independent music shindigs.
Jennings said his original agreement with Bordo gave him rights to the door profits, while the club got the bar money. During the incident Jennings said he was taken into a back room where an obese hoodlum screamed at him in Czech before punching then choking him. According to Jennings, another thug removed a weapon from a desk and brandished it around before concealing it safely down his pants. Though not a weapons’ expert, Jennings said the handgun "looked real". This goon squad then confiscated Jennings' mobile phone and demanded 2,000 CZK, said the indie mogul. No charges were ever filed in the case. Jennings, whose Panika nights now cooperate with the indierock.cz agency, says he is confident the club has cleaned up its act following the firing of the hustlers. He says Bordo has extended the hand of friendship, with an indierock.cz colleague now working as its booking manager. "It's kind of lost that shady quality while still being a cool club," said Jennings, 28, a Californian who hails from the San Francisco region. "I think it's going to be an important club on the Czech indie scene." Among those welcoming the news that the boycott has been lifted is the Reverend Feedback of leading Prague murder-rock juggernaut BLAQ MUMMY, which will headline Bordo's October 27 Halloween gig. "We supported the boycott, and we support the lifting of the boycott." said Feedback. "Just to be sure, though," the mummy-worshipper added, "we'll be bringing to Bordo the heavy voodoo turnstile of pain in case we have to dispense with any special-fee collector-types who may still be lingering. That's why we bring our own explosives."
