The first hint that you are at a Dresden Dolls show is the look of rapt attention on the faces of every audience member in the house. As you walk in, something is a little different - there are no groups of giggling girls by the bar, no lone stragglers looking disinterested through their bangs.   Everyone is staring, somewhere between enthralled and shocked, at the two figures on the stage, who seem to somehow be having a private conversation with each and every member of the audience.

The Dresden Dolls don't ask for your attention - they grab it from you and run. Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, the two performers met at a Halloween party in 2000 and have been thrilling audiences with their sizzling onstage chemistry ever since. With the voice and driving piano of the sultry Amanda Palmer, and the precise drum performances of the mysterious Brian Viglione, the Dresden Dolls are at the forefront of a movement the have coined "Brechtian Punk Cabaret," a performance that is as much theater as it is a live music show. The atmosphere the command draws on the cabaret style of Weimar-era Germany, the grit of a punk show, and the raw, explosive energy of a train wreck. The intricate, gothic costumes and the band's at times marionette-like movements serve only to enhance the emotional gut-punch of the music.

ImageBrian's explosive drumming coupled with Amanda's killer voice will have you rocking out in the front row. But the intimate atmosphere, along with the incredibly confessional lyrics, at times makes you wonder if you're at a rock show or out on a date - and it's these inherent contrasts that make the Dresden Dolls so irresistable. One of the inspirations for the band's name was the contrasting image - Dresden's associations with devestation and destruction juxtaposed with the image of a delicate and childlike doll. This contrast creates a hair-trigger tension in the music and doesn't leave you a second to catch your breath. A manic-depressive's dream come true, the Dresden Dolls will leave you laughing, crying, and begging for more. They have recently released their latest album, Yes, Virginia, and will play Abaton on April 29th.
