21 June Various locations www..fetedelamusique.de
A hive of music, more choice than a packed potraviny and with an atmosphere that buzzes like a dodgy neon sign Fête de la Musique returns to the dark heart of Deutschland as a true celebration. And if there’s anything worth celebrating it’s the longest day of the year (21 June) and Berlin’s annual free festivities across the city are a great excuse to revel in it.
The central theme of the festival is friendliness – free parties, an international audience and an open feeling of camaraderie throughout the streets. Twenty-six years on from its inaugural event in Paris Fête de la Musique now takes place in 340 cities worldwide, 60 of which are in Europe. Over 50 stages of open-air indie, electronic and punk music are artfully crafted by café owners, club owners, companies, schools and individuals. From cafés in effortlessly cool Kreuzberg to big stages in central Berlin why not take Fête de la Musique as a challenge in exploring the city? Or just sample as many as possible of the 500 bands on display in unconventional venues such as churches, boats, railway stations and swimming pools? Well-known locations like the House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt), some of the city's most prominent galleries and the famous Volksbühne also participate. Highlights include folk punks The Pokes’ appearance at Wild at Heart, futuristic psychopaths Endlos Endlos will produce an inevitably enthralling set, and for all you soul and Motown lovers, Golgatha perform in Viktoriapark. Truly it’s a fest for all tastes - if you like rocking out to blues before falling into a drum’n’bass club or catching some Brazilian beats and following it up with rockabilly then, bizarrely and beautifully, this isn’t an issue! The open air merriment ends at a pitiful 10pm but never fear as the La Nuit de la Musique is just beginning. Clubs everywhere host a similar range of music expanding from dance and techno to plenty more rock’n’roll. A gargantuan celebration with more daylight than you normally know what to do with. Don’t forget your sunglasses.
