by Natalia Vasquez Abaton 8 March, 2006 at 20:00 Na Košince 8 / Povltavská 2175 Praha 8, Holešovice In the early '90s a group of four MCs, dancers, producers, united to form the groovy, laid back group who calls themselves The Pharcyde . Originally from L.A., Tre “Slimkid” Hardson, Derrick “Fatlip” Stewart, Imani Wilcox, and Romye “Booty Brown” Robinson released their first album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde in 1992. This quartet incorporates a chill combination of a hip-hop, soul, underground sound that’s easy to listen to while encouraging a little booty-shakin’ and head-boppin’. Similar artists include: De la Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Del tha Funkee Homosapien.
The group doesn’t hide anything in their lyrics, rapping about encounters with the cops, what they did last night with their lady, “passing the pipe”, being rich, the music industry, and survival in this world. They use spoken word clips and various instruments and vocal sounds to achieve their sound. After their initial album, they followed up with Labcabincalifornia, Plain Rap, and Humbolt Beginnings. Throughout the years the group has moved in various directions leaving only two members; Imani Wilcox and Booty Brown.
