Saturday 22nd
Trunk Show (Berlin), after-party dance @ Popo Cafe Petl (20.00)
Trunk
Show brings their rag-tag assortment of instruments and salty dog
attitude to Popo Café Petl. In their trunk they carry lots of gizmos
with three vocalists that share the mic, although not at the same time.
The voice of Andru Davis seems sweet in comparison to the tequila
soaked sailor song of Aileen Loy, a female version of Tom Waits if you
like. Marc Cram’s contribution aligns more with an inebriated Kermit
the Frog on a bender. The percussion is served by whips, chains, and
gas cans as well as cheese graters and baby heads for the freakshow of
carpet-bagging misfits, often inciting the crowd into the frenzy of
phonics.
The performances tend to end in collapse and collision,
but always with a sense of witnessing the world's most beautiful train
wreck.
The Dodos (usa), The Ruby Suns (nz) @ Akropolis (19:00)
The Dodos superbly combine their exotic syncopations with a joyously taut indie-rock that suggests The Violent Femmes or Clinic. The lyrics are a mix of emotional candor and references to Roxy Music. The latter’s Brian Eno combined with David Byre for the key Afro-influenced LP My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Infectious, propulsive, unselfconscious. [Mojo August 2008]
Sunday 23rd
Okkervil River (usa), Bad Dudes (usa) @ Rock Café (19:30)
Austin, Texas´s OKKERVIL RIVER are playing their first and - thanks to their growing popularity - probably last club show in Prague this Sunday November 23rd at Rock Café.
One of the most respected and celebrated indie rock bands in the world started its journey 10 years ago. Formed in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. They self-released their first album, Stars Too Small to Use, which led them to the South by Southwest music festival. After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. Okkervil River continued by releasing four more albums, including critically lauded concept album Black Sheep Boy.[1] The band has garnered positive critical reception. Especially noted are each song's lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and thematic albums.
Okkervil River released their most recent album The Stand Ins on September 9th, 2008. They are promoting the release with a series of cover songs from the album on YouTube by people they've met as a band.[1]
We believe that seeing Okkervil River's first time in Prague will be a wonderful and reassuring experience for the audience too.
Monday 24th
Tricky (uk) @ Roxy (19:30)
Trip-hop, electronic, downtempo, electronica: (though he reportedly hates the lable 'trip-hop)
His lyrical style has been described as 'asthmatic whispering' and is something between singing and rapping. Tricky has created a rich bridge between white and black British music, particularly in his fusion of rock and hip-hop, high art and pop culture. Major influences range from rap Public Enemy, to post-punk.
The Wedding Present (uk) @ Lucerna (21:00)
The Wedding Present rose from the ashes of The Lost Pandas, a band formed in Leeds in the early 1980s by David Gedge and Jaz Rigby. Keith Gregory and, later, Michael Duane completed the line-up.
With the early releases on their own label The Wedding Present acquired a reputation for bittersweet, breathtakingly honest love songs. Recently, the The Wedding Present has enjoyed a Renaissance, setting out on a twenty month concert tour of Europe and North America, which included most of the major festivals and ended in November 2006. Their record EL REY (released summer of 2008) was greeted enthusiastically by critics. NME described the album as “a beauty… some of the funniest, cleverest and most relevant indie you’re likely to hear this year”. The current line up is: - Graeme Ramsay : drums, Terry de Castro : bass & backing vocals, Christopher McConville : guitar, David Gedge : guitar & singing
Wednesday 26th
Wovenhand @ Divadlo Archa
Edwards’ powerful and authoritative musicianship, coupled with lyrics that hit the mark with unflagging consistency, results in compelling music that is brooding, dark, and yet maintains a tight grip on hope itself.
Ocean vs. Daughter, Agave 9, View from Mars @ Chapeau (20:30)
"Super Imperfect & Live", here’s the perfect formula to showcase the touching frailty of the piano-vocalist Flanna S. You can feel the non-scientific equation, while listening to the "Fire" song. Whereas "Nothing to Say" sounds closer to a nursery rhyme in which Norah Jones' sweetness meets the Kate Nash universe.
Biohazard @ Abaton (19:30)
The original lineup of the highly influential New York-based group BIOHAZARD, whose intense fusion of the aggression of hardcore, punk and thrash metal with the socio-critical commentary and authenticity of hip-hop earned the band extensive international acclaim, will reunite for a series of performances in the summer of 2008 to commemorate the band's 20th anniversary.
