Budapest 12 - 18 August 32 Euros (Day) 150 Euros (Week inc. camping) Iron Maiden, R.E.M., Sex Pistols, Anti-Flag, Kaiser Chiefs www.sziget.hu
The humungous Sziget festival returns this year with its previously week-long musical feathers clipped down to five days of aural assault preceded by an opening ceremony concert from the rock dynasty that is Iron Maiden.
Set on Óbudai-sziget (Old-Buda Island) just outside Budapest, cheap day tickets make it ideal for those passing through. In fact, half of its 400,000 strong hoard of revelers are said to be musical-pilgrims from other countries. A Hungarian debut from the Sex Pistols and a headline slot from R.E.M. give healthy weight to the huge bill which includes plenty of local flavor. But while you take in the metal, indie, dance and world music on offer here, don’t forget to indulge in the impressive spread of global munchies topped off by Sziget’s renowned paella. If you’re up for a serious party this is the place, all night music in the bizarre sandy forest, chocolate wrestling that’d make Britney blush and a range of hammocks and tractor tires fashioned into beds make it a kind of alternative holiday camp.
