Where to start? Like a lizard king akin to the mighty Iggy Pop, In ate 2006 David Yow, ex The Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid and even art-time member of the awesome PigFace, - all part-Lords of American hardcore undergroound garage, joined Qui, originally founded in 2000 nd now returns to grace the stage with this new incarnation, namely ui a tight mix of punk, noise, metal and other experimental genres. ui's latest album "Love's Miracle" was released on September 11.2007 n Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings which is recommendation in itself.
No bass player? What's going on there? David started life as a bassist but soon ditched it in favour of singing and in this new band he really does sing! Two part harmonies? Sometimes three part harmonies break into the cacophony of the guitar/drums dynamic of Paul Matt Cronk (Guitar) and Christensen (Drums) and threaten to cart us all off to tea with Dorothy, adding a sort of quaint weirdness to proceedings. Prowling the stage like a panther, Yow treats the micrphone like a pack of cigarettes, hated and yet somehow integrated into the fabric of his existence. His taught frame writhing to the rhythms and howling guitar spitting carelessly and eyeballing just about everyone in the room.
Sometimes the guitarist lapses into ''advanced musical prowess'' (- aka muso wankery), a sort of 12 bar blues played on pinched harmonics (a trick used by uber-metallers Van Halen and other dinosaur acts - God Please Save Us All), serves as an interlude between a coupla numbers but seems an incongruous egotrip among the punknoize of the rest of the otherwise excellent set. Having just got the call a half hour before the show and paying a rather expensive 330 krowns, meaning a severely restricted beer budget, it was nonetheless worth it to see an older Yow still not yet past his prime and still raging. Having shaken his hand by the sound engineer booth I left a happy man with a rather large smile on my face and a list of pals to text and email the next day with the news.
