Freedom over servitude, self-rule over parliamentary democratic totality, and vibrant creative entertainment over grey work routine are some of the concepts the organizers behind the Weekend of Music & Protest are toying with. In its first year, and possibly also the last (the real incentive to attend), this three day anarchy-antiracism-antifascism-tainted fest, held on November 16th, 17th, and 18th, promises politically charged music, lectures, discussions, projections, and a carnival to ventilate rebellious tendencies.
The festival is comprised of three separate events joined together by the one thought: ‘the day we fight for democracy and freedom: who really does?’ It directly refers to November 17th, a public holiday, when the Czech nation remembers the years 1939 and 1989, and annually voices the importance of fighting for democracy. The questions raised will provide the central topic of the A-Kontra steered discussion at Klub 007 on the 17th (17:00), as well as prove relevant to AFA’s (Antifascist Action) lecture & projection titled “10 years of struggle against fascism: from the history and work experience of AFA” held at Infocafé Krtkova Kolona a day later (13:00).
The ‘anti’ theme swarming over this fest serves a ravishing intellectual meal to chew on for the traditionally defiant punk and hardcore bands - and there will be lots. Klub Bordo is hosting an antifascist-antiracist-five-band concert on Thursday at 18:00. The acts are: Thema 11 (emo-hardcore), Balaclavy (old-school hardcore), Edelweiss Piraten (melodic punk with a trumpet), Rumburak (intensive emo-hardcore with a tinge of metal and an angry tomcat behind the mic), and Red Insect (punk as fuck). 25 hours later and 4 city districts further, Sadako (hardcore), Thalidomide (Prague’s punk veterans), and Ravelin 7 (emo’n’roll) will voice their frustrations/minds at Klub 007.
As promised, to put an end to the/your dull work routine of the dreary reality, the Weekend of Music & Protest staff have planned for a liberating Carnival Against Oppression on Friday 17th. The celebration starts at Palackého Náměstí at 14:00, so there’s plenty of time to create that ingenious mask as well as to dig out an instrument or two for some serious noise/music making.
