Tired of stuff that sucks? Well we gots the cure for whats ails ya. Recommended Events Listings: In addition to a print magazine we are media sponsors for things of specific interest that happen to be a bit weird, marginal or under the radar. 13/08/08 The Dark Knight @ Bio Oko / 21:30 Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos.
Circus Ponorka @ Rock Café / 19:30 Circus Ponorka is Honza Ponocny. With one voice, one acoustic guitar, two samplers, and a whole lotta love for what he's doing, he creates a sound that might best be described as do-it-yourself nu-wave folk rock. If you're into Jack Johnson, G-Love, Ben Harper, then Circus Ponorka should be on your playlist. Honza Ponocny is one of the top musicians in his country. He has appeared on more than 4O albums and has also produced a few multi-platinum discs for Universal Czech Republic. He is a former member of the Czech „supergroup“ Alias, which included guitarist Ivan Kral of the Patti Smith Group, has opened for acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and currently performs with top Slovak singer/songwriter Meky Zbirka.
14/08/08 Block Party @Strelak / 19:30 In September 2004, comedian Dave Chappelle took a break from his immensely successful Comedy Central show to stage a free, unpublicized, all-star hip-hop concert in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Inviting fans over the Internet, on the street, and even in his family's hometown of Yellow Springs, OH, Chappelle asked filmmaker Michel Gondry to document the event from its inception on through to the performances themselves. The result is Dave Chappelle's Block Party, a concert film that provides not only a sampling of the music on display that September, but also an intimate look at the comedian himself. Gondry's cameras tag along with Chappelle as he visits Ohio, recruits a university marching band to play at the show, and surveys the opinions of Clinton Hill on the show that's about to take place. Along the way, we're introduced to some the comedian's favorite acts, in rehearsals and on-stage: Dead Prez, Jill Scott, Mos Def, the Roots, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, and the surprise reuniting of the Fugees. 15/08/08 The Houseboat Dealers @ The Globe / 20:00 An exciting new band on the Prague music scene, The Houseboat Dealers will play tonight at The Globe. Set sail for uncharted waters with the pioneers of Float-Rock ! 16/08/08 Escarres @ Chateau Rouge / 20:00 In 2005, in Nancy, France, Mignon and JP decided to form Escarres to make real, loud noise, but not just any noise... A destroyed and rock'n roll noise coming from their guts. Joined later by Boris ad Gaetan, they could write the definitive story of Escarres in 2006. In july of that same year, the band recorded its five first songs in studio... In 2008 Escarres is now touring to promote their upcoming album. 17/08/08 R.E.M. @ Station Eden / 19:00 R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern. Though there were no overt innovations in their music, R.E.M. had an identity and sense of purpose that transformed the American underground... Annie Hall @ Strelak / 19:30 Woody Allen's romantic comedy of the Me Decade follows the up and down relationship of two mismatched New York neurotics. Jewish comedy writer Alvy Singer (Allen) ponders the modern quest for love and his past romance with tightly-wound WASP singer Annie Hall (Diane Keaton, née Diane Hall). The twice-divorced Alvy knows that it's not easy to find a mate when the options include pretentious New York intellectuals and lifestyle-obsessed Rolling Stone writers, but la-di-dah-ing Annie seems different. 18/08/08 Less Than Jake @ Rock Café / 20:00 Formed in 1992 as a power pop trio with a heavy punk influence, a sense of humor, and a fixation with Pez candy, Less Than Jake metamorphosed into a ska-inspired punk band with the addition of several members from 1993 to 1995. Vocalist and guitarist Chris Demakes, bassist Shaun, and drummer/lyricist Vinnie Fiorello were the first incarnation of the group, based in Gainesville, FL; after Shaun became the group's roadie, however, he was eventually replaced by Roger Manganelli, who picked up bass just to join the band. During 1993-1994, the group added its first horn player, Jessica, and soon after came trombone player Buddy Schaub.
