On Friday January 13th I was saddened to hear that we lost another proponent of ecological activism- in particular the way he met his end was an example of tragic irony straight from the Webster definition. My friend Kuba of HPK productions was livid, "he didn't organise some uselss shows or play in some bullshit band! he was working hard to make a better world from this f*cking hole! " "I saw him the day before [the accident] in Citadela cafe," recalled Kuba wistfully, "putting on his helmet and riding home to play with his son, saying [playing with his son] was the best thing in the world. Next day he was run over on his bicycle on his way home from Bulva bar..." I asked Kuba if there was aything I could do to help. "Just let people know about it, about the pages, about the movement...." If there's one thing that should be known about his death - it's what he has done in his life and the extraordinary efforts he put forth in improving the world around him. -peace and protest, Marika One of Jan's contributions to our world Auto-mat. On January 12, the Director of Ozivení and Auto*Mat project coordinator, Jan Bouchal (30) died due to injuries sustained when he was hit by a car. The collision happened on January 6 while he was cycling home from his work. Bouchal coordinated the Auto*Mat initiative, which is aimed at reduction of car-use and support for bicycle, pedestrian and public transport. He was also a regular participant and supporter of the Prague Critical Mass promoting rights of cyclists and he was one of the initiators of the safe routes to school program in Prague. For the last five years, Bouchal had an active role in anti-corruption campaigns with his work as director of the civic association Ozivení. He became the informal leader of the Alliance Without Corruption (Aliance Bezkorupce), a coalition of citizens for transparency in the state and municipal administrations. He was also assisting other group members of the SOS Praha coalition bringing to the media's attention issues of environmental protection and urban planning. Jan Bouchal left behind his girlfriend Petra and one-year-old son Jakub. Jan Bouchal was a great father and an honorable citizen. Friends of Bouchal have established a fund for his son and partner, who is currently on maternity leave. The fund is overseen by friends and co-workers, including Eva Vavroušková, Petr Štepánek, and others. The bank account number is 2280070001, bank code 2400. The account is fully transparent and anyone can see activity on the account at the website of E-banka. All the money collected will be used exclusively to help Bouchal's family. Any amounts are welcome. On Sunday Jan 15 at Vagon Club at Národní trída at 20:00, there will be a benefit concert for his family, with Diktát., Flaming Cocks and Pohrební kapela. On Thursday, January 19, there will be commemorative Critical Mass bike ride starting at 18:00 from nam. Jirího z Podebrad. From 18:45 to 19:15, there will be a short ceremony where the accident occurred (the intersection of nábr. kapitána Jaroše and Dukelských hrdinu). At 19:30, in the Alfréd ve dvore theatre (Františka Krízka 36, Praha 7), there will be a discussion about the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on Prague's streets. Participants will include Zdenek Bambas (director of the Prague traffic police), Petr Štepánek (honourable chairman- Ozivení), and Robert Štastný (head of the Ministry of Transport).
