Creamfields festival, the brainchild of the British super club Cream, is a renowned institution of house music and debauchery. 2008 sees Creamfields celebrate its 10th anniversary in a landmark year with the event set to become the world's biggest electronic music festival. This year’s megafest celebrates a new beginning as they foray into central Europe for the first time (not to mention further inaugrual fests in Chile and Brazil). The Czech Republic will have a Creamfields of its own for the first time this summer as will Romania (August 2) with a slightly different line-up, check the above site for more information but the mention of Pendulum, Vitalic and Aphrodite should arouse your interest. It looks set to have a huge impact in Břeclav where the Czech version of the fest will host the icy wonder of Ladytron, the clipped beats of Coldcut and the ridiculous skills of drum’n’bassstar Andy C, who are amongst the stupidly talented line-up, which includes a warm-up set prior to the fest. Bringing mainstream dance to the Czech Republic like never before and spearheading an explosive new era for European festivals there’s no doubt Creamfields had landed: Be ready.

July 18-20

430 (One day) 550 (Two days) 680 (Three days)

Dennis Alcapone, The Mad Caddies, The Real McKenzies

Its fiercely independent spirit, lively, enthusiastic promotion, and the sheer range of music exhibition to its discerning fans sets this festival well apart from all others. Numerous acts from the realms of ska, reggae, punk, rocksteady, dancehall, hardcore, rock’n‘roll and indie rock will all be represented across Mighty Sounds’ six stages. The festival also offers theater for those in need of a cultural injection. Famous old-school reggae artist MC Dennis Alcapone leads a multi-national line-up, which also sees the appearance of ska maniacs The Mad Caddies, perhaps the perfect festival band with their ceaseless energy and a safe stashed full of tunes. Iries Révoltés return with multi-lingual jazz, ska, hip-hop and punk rants always set to entertain. Billed as the biggest ska-punk festival in Europe and cheaper than a hooker’s make-up, it’ll be mighty tricky to avoid the Czech Republic’s southerly green pastures come July.

Back to Future Festival, Hangar, Germany

17-19 July

30 Euro adv/36 Euro on door

The Adolescents, The Real McKenzies, Deadline, Outl4w

www.back-to-future.com

This renowned German fest (est. 1996) boldly warns that “no fashion victims or style addicts” will be tolerated. Luckily “music geeks from the outback” are more than welcome at its new home in Hangar, Dessau. Spreading itself like a thick dollop of icing sugar across punk, psychobilly, oi! and ska, the broad spectrum of Back to Future is perhaps its most attractive feature. In truth, Back to Future is an exciting leap of faith as the organizers encourage you to “trust us ‘cause we like you” in their musical taste. Although bands of some prestige (including Canadians The Real McKenzies) will appear, it’s a festival more about great atmosphere than big names, beer than Schnitzel and fun over fashion.

Image Rock Werchter 2008

Werchter, Belgium

3-6 July

www.rockwerchter.be

Prices: 1-Day Pass: 75 Euro. Combi Ticket: 165 Euro. Camping pass: 17 Euro.

Even though Rock Werchter is held in a muddy field in the Flemish heartland, it's easy to get to this four-day festival with free rail and bus transport directly from anywhere within Belgium. Rock Wechter might win the award for most varied selection, with big-name acts such as Jay-Z, The Chemical Brothers, The Hives, Radiohead, REM, Ben Harper, and Neil Young. Rock Werchter has sold out every year since 2001, and single-day passes for day one are already gone, so if you’re into beer, chocolate and rock n’ roll, you’d better get in gear.
