02/07/08 Flogging Molly @ Rock Café Prepare yourself for the pipes and whistles to sound in Prague, as Irish-American celtic-punk band Flogging Molly return for their European tour. In March this year, their fourth studio album Float went straight into #4 in the Billboard 200 chart, described by Alternative Press as "one of the most important records of this year, if not the decade". The seven-member band saw it as a turning point for themselves, as their first album recorded in Ireland. It brings a darker and more political sound than their previous punk outings, and its success was a milestone for record label SideOneDummy and the Celtic Punk genre in general. With two members of the band recently wed whilst on tour on Tokyo (lead singer Dave King and fiddle-player Bridget Regan), there's plenty of reason for celebration as Flogging Molly tear their way through Europe. Rose Tattoo @ Retro Music Hall / 20:00 Aussie hard rock combo Rose Tattoo was formed in Sydney in 1976 by ex-Buffalo guitarist Peter Wells; with the additions of former Buster Brown vocalist Angry Anderson, guitarist Mick Cocks, bassist Ian Rilen and drummer Dallas "Digger" Royal, the group made their public bow on New Year's Eve at the local club Chequers, which several years earlier launched the career of AC/DC. Chiefly inspired by the Rolling Stones and the Faces, Rose Tattoo's ferocious, ear-splitting sound quickly earned a devoted following among Sydney area pubgoers, and in 1978 the group signed to Albert Productions 03/07/08 Kaiser Chiefs @ Rock For People / 20:00
When Tears for Fears sang, "Kick out the Style/Bring back the Jam," in "Sowing the Seeds of Love," one can imagine the lads in Kaiser Chiefs raising their mugs of ale in agreement. Comprised of vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick Baines, and drummer Nick Hodgson, Kaiser Chiefs resurrected the mod spirit of the Jam in "I Predict a Riot," supercharged class of '77 power pop that quickly electrified the British press when it was released in 2004.

Records. With its shimmering melodies, glistening layers of synths and acoustic guitar, and up-tempo electronic beats, System “is a return to my roots,” Seal says. “My first album was upbeat music that you could dance to, and I kind of departed from that as time went by. I also wanted to return to the guitar, to the very first instrument I wrote ‘Crazy’ and ‘Killer’ on, and get back to the fundamentals of what I really love to do. What I really care about now is the same thing I cared about back in 1990, which is songs.” Avril Lavigne @ O2 Arena / 20:00 She's like Alanis Morissette with less moustache, or Nicole Richie with a guitar. Thanks to this canadian teenager, Pro-Tool achieved worldwide stardom by proving everyone you need no talent to sing or play guitar - just a good producer and a fast computer. Girls just want to look like her, boys just want to shag her. I give her two years before posing nude in Playboy or shooting a sex tape. |
