STDS: Stuff That Doesn't Suck - 09/07/08 to 15/07/08 Tired of stuff that sucks? Well we got the cure for what ails ya. Recommended Events Listings: In addition to a print magazine we are media sponsors for things of specific interest that happen to be a bit weird, marginal or under the radar. Get Your STDS Checkup: 09/07/08 Juan Manuel Romero @ Galería Parásito / 18h "Transportable, unbreakable" : tonight is the vernissage of Romero de Mexico! 10/07/08 Wu Tang Clan @ Malá sportovní hala / 20h The Wu-Tang Clan influenced everyone from Jay-Z to Kanye West, and everyone considers 36 Chambers to be a Hip-Hop cornerstone. But why can't you read anything about The Wu-Tang Clan without a mention of their revolutionary business plan ? And how relevant is that when it comes to music ? Nowadays, the minimalist sound of 36 Chambers is anything but frustrating. But although they've spent the first ten years of their careers as arrogant sell-outs, their last effort, 8 Diagrams, was satisfying and their last strings of shows were the work of genuine music lovers : for once, it's a good thing that a band isn't returning to form...
Darjeeling Ltd @ Strelak / 9:30pm
Darjeeling Ltd is the latest film from acclaimed director Wes Anderson, starring Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody. Three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond. Their "spiritual quest" veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine. Except memorable characters, clever writing and amusing situations aplenty.
Films are being shown almost every night on Střelák island, opposite the Nadroni Divadlo/National Theatre and below Legii Most. Shown every night at 9pm during June and July, and 9.30pm throughout August, the range on offer is immense, with a bar and the Vlatva for company to keep you keen. Bathory předpremiéra @ Kino Lucerna / 19h If you haven't seen Bathory at Carlovi Vary, you must have been eagerly waiting for its release in Prague this Wednesday: this is the most expensive movie that was produced yet in Czech Republic and Slovakia. It tells the famous story of Elizabeth Bathory, a cruel countess from Romania who killed more than eighty young men and women (some say six hundreds!), to bath in their blood and retain her youth. It kinda worked actually, since she was sent to jail and died there before she could even grow old.
11/07/08 Obscure Extreme Festival @ Trutnov (800Kc) Extreme Noise Terror, Aborted, Impaled Nazarene, Desecration, Alehammer 12/07/08 Control @ Strelak / 20:00 I'm Not There did not move you (not that it could move anyone actually). Your girlfriend liked Walk The Line more than you did and got you sick of Johnny Cash before he produced anything with Nick Rubin. Last Days made you realise how boring Elefant really was ; you still wonder if that Rolling Stones movie about Brian Jones exists and wonder why Shine A Light's set list is so unappealing. There may be one reason why Control is the only movie of its kind worth looking: Anton Corbijn has lived with the band back when no one cared about them. He followed them on tour and was one of Ian's very few friends. When it comes to biographies, the key world is honesty, and everything in Control is positively true. Tonight, transmission at Strelak! Creamfields @ Breclav / 16:00 Creamfields festival, the brainchild of the British super club Cream, is a renowned institution of house music and debauchery. 2008 sees Creamfields celebrate its 10th anniversary in a landmark year with the event set to become the world's biggest electronic music festival. This year’s megafest celebrates a new beginning as they foray into central Europe for the first time (not to mention further inaugrual fests in Chile and Brazil). The Czech Republic will have a Creamfields of its own for the first time this summer as will Romania (August 2) with a slightly different line-up, check the above site for more information but the mention of Pendulum, Vitalic and Aphrodite should arouse your interest. It looks set to have a huge impact in Břeclav where the Czech version of the fest will host the icy wonder of Ladytron, the clipped beats of Coldcut and the ridiculous skills of drum’n’bassstar Andy C, who are amongst the stupidly talented line-up, which includes a warm-up set prior to the fest. Bringing mainstream dance to the Czech Republic like never before and spearheading an explosive new era for European festivals there’s no doubt Creamfields had landed: Be ready. 13/07/08 Obscure Extreme Festival After show Party @ Exit Chmelnice / 20:00 (150Kc) Acts: Splitter, Demonical, Disturbance Project and Dead Beyond Buried 14/07/08 John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers @ Retro Music Hall / 20:00 If you are a teenager, you may have heard of The Bluesbreakers while you were hanging around the Rolling Stones department of your record store, religiously looking at their records from the 60s and wondering if the Mick Taylor era (starting in 69) was just as good as the previous one. Mick Taylor was one of John Mayall's students in the Bluesbreakers, and so were Eric Clapton and Peter Green (from Fleetwood Mac fame). With The Yardbirds, The Bluesbreakers is the band that formed the greatest number of superstar guitarists of the 70s ; yet like Jeff Beck, John Mayall reached another top a few years ago, and it is commonly acknowledged that The Bluesbreakers now provide an even better experience now than they did back then... even though there's only one superstar left! 15/07/08 Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ? @ Švandovo divadlo na Smíchově Apparently, Edward Albee thought Virginia Woolf was scarier than the big bad wolf. In his 1963 play, George and Martha invite a new professor and his wife to their house after a party. Martha is the daughter of the president of a university where George is an associate history professor. Nick (who is never addressed or introduced by name) is a biology professor who Martha thinks teaches math, and Honey is his mousy, brandy-abusing wife. Once at home, Martha and George continue drinking and engage in relentless, scathing verbal and sometimes physical abuse in front of Nick and Honey. Nick and Honey are simultaneously fascinated and embarrassed. They stay even though the abuse turns periodically towards them as well...
