EXIT Fest, Novi Sad, Serbia

10 - 13 July

96 EUR

Manu Chao, Gogol Bordello, The Hives, M.I.A., Laurent Garnier, Tiga, 2 Many DJs

www.exitfest.org

Join over 200,000 people getting into a State of Exit this year at the fantastic Petrovaradin Fortress sitting pretty on the banks of the Danube in Serbia. The festival began in 2000 as a riverside musical protest against Slobodan Milošević, and came to a close, not coincidentally, days before the historic election that began his long-overdue fall from grace. The following year saw the sun rise over the infamous Dance Arena for the first time as Exit found its official home in the labyrinthine tunnels, moats and walls of the 17th century citadel. Not just a political festival, Exit draws some of the world’s best musicians as well as some of the world’s most dedicated partiers to the provincial Serbian town of Novi Sad. Book planes, trains and automobiles early, and while the camp grounds may have a life of their own, if you actually want some sleep, book a bed at one of the local schools that opens its doors to revelers. Exit is an odd festival in one way: it does not run all day. The Dance Arena closes at about 9pm, when the after party is just beginning...

Castle Party Festival

Bolkow, Poland

25-27 July

€30 - 45

Deine Lakaien, Die Krupps, Anne Clark, The Cruxshadows, Closterkeller

www.castleparty.com

Castle Party is an independent festival for darker sounds snugly housed in the courtyard of Bolkow Castle (which has as turbulent a history as many Polish palaces).

Ghouls, vampires and succubi from all over the world meet once again in what remains the scariest fest in central Europe. This year sees Castle Party returning to its leftfield roots with both local gothic acts and Zimmer frame-wielding cult bands such as Die Krupps strutting their stuff. Pack spare underwear for super-scares!

Colours of Ostrava, Czech Republic

July 10-13

Tickets: 660-1200 CZK

Main acts: Sinéad O´Connor, Happy Mondays, Gorgol Bordello, Hawkwind

www.colours.cz

Who can deny themselves a visit to the town than has birthed legendary tennis star Ivan Lendl, novelist Ota Filip and, erm, pole-vaulter Kateřina Baďurová? With as diverse a range of artists as you’ll see across the Czech Republic this summer it’s well worth getting yourself down to the Silesian Castle. Gypsy rock comes from the purple-attired Gorgol Bordello, while the legendary Hawkwind will ensure there will be air guitars held aloft with pride. Mauretania’s own Daby Touré will provide some soulful sounds with his incredible vocal range. And for the old schoolers amongst us, the Happy Mondays will be bringing a hippy vibe, the Dandy Warhols will provide the indie fix and Sinéad O´Connor provides a little glamour with her crystalline voice. Certainly a more dignified and serene affair than most on these pages, but no less exciting. And with backdrop of the renaissance style chateau originally built in the 13th century the setting could not be more ideal for this real music-addicts festival.

Fluff Fest 2008

July 25-25

Rokycany near Plzeň, Czech Respublic

25 € for three days

Raein (IT), Bane (US), Lack (DK), Meneguar (US), Death By Stereo (US), War From A Harlots Mouth (DE)

www.fluffmusic.com

The ninth edition of the European summer hardcore camp provides plenty more than just a healthy stack of ear-service from the international line-up on show. As full and efficient a service as you'd expect from a hardcore fest there's plenty of munchies, cinema and, naturally, screamo. Fluff Festival is a truly international event well worth packing your dancing shoes for.
