Monday the 14^th of June, Palac Akropolis hosted Berlin’s well respected The Whitest Boy Alive and their fans in Prague. The band's brand of music is hard to categorize, combining elements of electro, pop, indie and funk. Since their start in 2003 The Whitest Boy Alive have released two albums and as singer Erlend Oye, mentioned, "toured the world from Jakarta to South America", former Kings of Convenience guitarist also declared to the exuberant Prague Crowd he was glad to be back in Prague- the crowd was thrilled!

When going to see a band that plays atmospheric music there is always the danger that despite the quality of the music it might be dull. This is what sets The Whitest Boy Alive apart from other similar bands of the similar genre their enormous capacity to entertain. During the show's 90 minute musical manna communication between crowd and band was flawless. The superb musicianship that bassist Oz, drummer Maschat and keyboardist Nentwig possess, in conjunction with the inventive techniques which they approach their instruments, contributes to the quality of their recorded material and in this case; wildly entertaining to watch. Further Oye’s voice,which sounds even better live, has a major impact to their sound and did its part in subliminally hypnotizing those present.

Oye demanded participation from the devotees - happy to sing along and dance to every song among which were the favorites 1571 and Burning . At one point in the evening he even jumped in the crowd and partied with everyone, which only served to confirm his status as one of the most beloved frontmen out there today. Needless to say that turned the show from an indie concert into a dance-rave where being idle was just not an option.

The Whitest Boy Alive serve as a reminder of the importance of live shows as a channel for connecting musicians with their fans and vice versa. ;all members have the ability of making it seem like they are playing to each and every individual in the room. The next concert will probably be underlined by the same feeling of intimacy and if you were in Akropolis that evening, you most likely cannot wait for it!

Ocean vs Daughter

an informal chat with Flanna Sheridan

When you hear Flanna Sheridan's sweet and velvety voice opposed to the waterfall of vigorous piano-raindrops and the colourful, warm and thunderous violin and cello flows, suddenly the mysterious name of the band makes sense: their music is like a wide expanse of water that can be sometimes quiet and sometimes stormy, nevertheless the sound is always clean, defined, and it's not hard to imagine Flanna as one of the Nereids, the nymphs that accompanied Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.

But apart from this stream of consciousness, side effect of their hypnotic music, if you ask Flanna why they chose that name, she will answer you, understated, that it was nothing so profound, “we were just thinking of something powerful like the ocean”. And again, when questioned about the allusive and

oedipic lyrics of the song No Tell “if you wanna go to a hotel, I won't tell no one, if you want to go a hotel, get a room for one, I won't tell no one, you can use my father's name”, she will just reply: “It's a honest song. Nothing more than that”. Flanna would rather talk about how scary was for her to sing in front of a public for the first time, “I used to play the keyboards in another band. When the band broke up, I decided to make my own but I was scared to death because when you are on a stage, singing your own songs, the songs that you wrote, you really feel vulnerable”.

Ocean vs Daughter are like that, modest, unglamorous, naive, but as a result, they are cool without trying. Their songs, the atmosphere they manage to create, their lyrics, all concur to draw a delicate and charming emotional landscape.

When she was 17, Flanna came from US to Germany and then to Prague, without even knowing that Czech Republic existed, and she fell madly in love with the city. So madly in love that, realising she was both bored and feeling older than her years in her work as an English-German translator, she packed her stuff and came back to Prague to start a new life.

It's here that the Czech-British-American project Ocean vs Daughter was conceived. The members of the band have been enjoying playing together for a long time, in different ways, juxtaposing guitar, drums and keyboards with more unusual instruments, such as violin, cello, microkorg

and bells.

“We don't want to be an expats band”, says Flanna, “in the beginning, our public was basically formed by Americans living in Prague, but lately we are starting to get a Czech audience, and that's really great!”. The Czech capital is a special place for Flanna, “it may sound trivial, but Prague oozes a really peculiar energy which had a massive influence on our music”. After many concerts in the city, the band is going to perform soon at Palác Akropolis, “I can't believe that we are going to be on the same stage where Pixies and Stereolab

[one of Flanna's favourite bands] played, it's really exciting”.

Stefano Musso as Alio Die acts on the music scene more than twenty years and is one of the cornerstones of ethnic branch of ambient music. From his music through to physically prožitost small fine nuance of natural events that can in his music and of course, to describe. He joined musical career early nineties, he founded the publishing Hic sunt leones and during almost two decades has delivered more than forty albums, while very happy collaborated with musicians from different musical spectrum range. Whether they were colleagues Vienna Obmana, Robert Rich, Lustmord darker, Indian singer Amelia cuni, Japanese girls darkwave Jack Or Jive or electronic dancer Red Sector. A special position among colleagues to Italian Raffaele Serra and colleagues Matteo Zini, with which it has side projects Five Thousand Spirit or Sola Translatio. Mathias Grassow

Mathias Grassow, which currently ranks among the world leaders in the field of ambient meditation music and often collaborates with other musicians who create music similar operating deep in the human mind and soul. At the beginning of the 80 years Grassow started mainly keyboard instruments syntezátorům, programming and style are ranked more to New Age. Later, the music began to lean to a net ambient with ethnic elements or so-called drones, are often the sounds of Tibetan bowls from his long camp Klaus Wieseho. Creation Mathias Grassowa has a strong spiritual dimension and is related to his musical and spiritual evolution, which is close to the Indian yoga sound (nada yoga) and the instruments for which he played - tánpúra, zither, Tibetan bowls, overtone singing. Furthermore, it ovlinila path of Buddhism, súfismu, Christian mysticism, but also inspiration Celts and Vikings. His music is mostly developed in the longer time-pieces, which, although fiction to cool electronic tools and have a strong emotional, heart-warming effect of a spiritual dimension.

Neurosis needs no introduction. The Bay Area's legendary masters of behemoth, psychedelic operatic guitar girth has influenced a wide array of artists and nearly singlehandedly defined vast extremes of heavy music popular today. However, now in its third decade, Neurosis' latest album finds the group's sound transforming yet again so dramatically that even to diehard fans, Given To The Rising might seem starkly different, a stunning reintroduction.

Given To The Rising is like being submerged in an isolation tank -- it's enveloping, subverting the senses with surreal visions we'd swear were our own, cleverly jarring and disorienting consciousness beyond any footing in reality. As any diehard Neurosis fan will tell you, there's a moment with every new record and live show at which the band will stop as if the world has frozen in position, then suddenly kick into the primordial wail that we've all come to recognize as the "Neurosis note" that forces the listener's head and shoulders to lurch and sway almost uncontrollably. Given To The Rising is Neurosis at its most captivating and hypnotic.

Put simply, the album is some of the band's most raw and immediate material to date, but it is also more complexly orchestrated and richly thickened with psych-damaged overtones. Given To The Rising is more than a just a powerful collection of songs -- it's more like a religious experience. While personal epiphanies are repeatedly told by those who've been converted by Neurosis' sensory overloading live show as well as its recordings, there's a hypnotic quality to this album that takes hold from the opening guitar squall of the title track.

Lamb is an electronic music duo from Manchester, England whose music is influenced by trip hop and drum and bass. The duo consists of producer Andy Barlow, who also produces under the pseudonym Hipoptimist, and singer-songwriter Lou Rhodes. They achieved commercial success with two hit singles "Gorecki" and "Gabriel".
Although getting their start in Manchester, Lamb are more commonly associated with the Bristol-based trip hopsound that was popular during the nineties. Aside from trip hop, their musical style is a distinctive mixture of jazz, dub, breaks and drum and bass, with a strong vocal element and, in their later works especially, some acoustic influences.

Po třech úspěšných deskách a sérii našláplých koncertů – přednedávnem například na bratislavském Wilsonicu – si kritiky ceněné kanadské trio vzalo jako další cíl Prahu: v úterý 4. srpna 2009 zahřejí svým elektro-popem pražský klub Roxy. Sekundovat jim budou s představením zbrusu nové nahrávky "More" domácí matadoři Sporto, line-up uzavřou MIDI LIDI v exkluzivním dj-setu.

Junior Boys založili dva kamarádi z kanadského Hamiltonu Jeremy Greenspan a Johnny Dark již v roce 1999, ovšem světu o sobě dali vědět až o 4 roky později. Tehdy totiž i přes odchod Darka, vyšlo první EP s remixem od již proslulého Fennesze. Posilněn úspěchem, Jeremy Greenspan oslovil studiového inženýra Matta Didemuse a společně připravili první desku Last Exit (2004), kde poprvé definovali svůj zvuk kombinací elektronických off-beat vrstev a silných melodií, vytvářejíc tak svébytnou alternativu k středoproudému popu. Mezinárodní ohlas si po právu zasloužila druhá nahrávka So This Is Goodbye (2006) – již na známe značce Domino Records – která vyvolala nadšené reakce publika i recenzentů, odstartovala smršť remixů od (Hot Chip, Carl Craig) i pro (Stars, Sally Shapiro), turné s Mouse on Mars nebo účast na světových festivalech. Na letošní Begone Dull Care pak Junior Boys dovedli své pojetí electro-popu k dospělosti a jen potvrzují výtečnou formu jak nahrávky, tak zejména dokonale zvládnuté živé provedení.
