Czech court awards two women compensation for illegal sterilizations

Two women who are no longer able to bear children as a result of operations performed on them without their permission have been awarded hundreds of thousands of Czech crowns by the High Court in Prague. David Záhumenský, chair of the League of Human Rights, which is representing the patients, announced the news in a press release to Romea.cz today. Some activists say dozens of women, most of them Roma, have been sterilized without their consent in the Czech Republic, but precise statistics on the phenomenon have not been gathered.

Záhumenský said the court has awarded CZK 200 000 to a woman from North Bohemia. A previous decision by the regional court awarded her only one-fourth that amount.

Another woman was awarded CZK 150 000 in compensation for the removal of her ovaries without her consent. The High Court doubled the amount awarded by the lower court.

The League says medical professionals in both cases most probably did not intend the women harm. In the case of the sterilization, they believed they were protecting the woman from the risk associated with carrying another child to term, and in the case of the ovary removal, they believed they were reducing the woman’s risk of cancer. However, instead of offering the women other possible solutions and allowing them to freely choose, the doctors decided in an authoritarian manner on the women’s behalf. “Such an approach has nothing to do with modern medicine. Doctors must learn to respect patients’ freedom of choice and their rights. If they not, then they should count on patients turning to the courts, which are slowly learning to award compensation for such harms in amounts that are not insignificant even for large hospitals,” Zahumenský said.

The League of Human Rights informs patients of their rights through the web pages of a special project, “Fair Hospital”. People can access the project’s counseling service free of charge; the project strives to achieve out-of-court settlements of health care disputes.

The Czech Constitutional Court has repeatedly pointed out that the failure to award sufficient satisfaction for violations of bodily integrity is equivalent to denial of justice. Despite this, it is taking a very long time for the Czech courts to learn to award the kind of financial compensation that could at least somewhat ameliorate the harm caused by these violations of human dignity.

In the past, several women suing over illegally performed sterilizations have not succeeded. Last October the Constitutional Court rejected a complaint by Helena Ferenčíková, who was awarded an apology from the Vítkovice Hospital, but not the one million crowns compensation she was seeking, due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

In 2007 the Regional Court in Ostrava awarded CZK 500 000 to Ms Iveta Červeňáková, also represented by the League. However, the High Court subsequently overturned that ruling due to expiration of the statute of limitations. The League believes the fair amount of financial satisfaction in cases of such serious violations of bodily integrity should be a minimum of half a million crowns.

In November 2009, the government of Czech PM Jan Fischer expressed regret over these illegal sterilizations, which have primarily concerned Romani women. Czech Human Rights and Minorities Minister Michael Kocáb says measures are forthcoming to prevent similar crimes. Health care facilities should be able to ensure that women undergoing sterilization have given genuinely informed consent. The Czech Health Ministry should include this question on the program of its Expert Forum for the Creation of Standards of Care.

TURBONEGRO (Oslo, NOR)

Turbonegro (Turboneger in Norway) is a Norwegian punk rock band that was initially active from 1989 to 1998, and later reformed in 2002. Their style combines glam rock, punk rock and hard rock into a style the band describes as "deathpunk".

Among the band's main influences are Black Flag, Rolling Stones, KISS, Venom, Radio Birdman, AC/DC, Iggy Pop & James Williamson, Circle Jerks, Ramones, Alice Cooper, Negazione, The Dictators and The Stooges,as well as Norwegian rock like DumDum Boys, Raga Rockers and Jokke & Valentinerne

Their lyrics often attack political correctness; for example, the cover of the single "Bad Mongo" depicts Adolf Hitler as mentally retarded, and in the song "Hobbit Motherfuckers", they complain that there is "not enough suffering" and "not enough natural selection". The band says their music has superseded existing genres, so they dubbed it deathpunk as a way to avoid being pigeon-holed into musical groupings they felt they were above. Lyrics referencing the genre choice include ("gimme deathpunk baby, and I like it", from the song "Get it on"). Being a fun project with common predecessors (Sex Pistolswearing swastikas, etc), Turbonegro have been praised by some as playing the most up-to-date form of punk, and refusing to be categorized being nowhere as clearly expressed as in this anarchic blend of humour, shock and sexuality.

FLAMING COCKS (Praha, CZ)

The Flaming Cocks was at the beginning a side project of five musicians from Prague which has slowly become their main activity. The members come from different backgrounds, from different bands: Vertigo (ska), 2v1 (ska-punk), Drunken.. Boomerang (ska), Bad Tones (psychobilly) and Dreadrot (HC), but there..s one thing they all have in common and that is their passion for Rock..n..Roll! Influenced by bands like The Misfits, Turbonegro, Mötorhead, Mad Sin, The Peacocks but also by Elvis Presley and many others they've created their own version of punk, rock..n..roll, hardrock and hard core. Flaming Cocks play Turbo Rock..n..Roll! Their music is a mixture of punk playfulness and hard-core attack. All is wrapped up in a rock..n..roll veil. Slapping bass, melodic singalongs, hard guitars and attacking percussions are rushing ahead like a steam locomotive. Crazy drive! Flaming Cocks were formed in 2002 and have already played over 150 of gigs and have appeared on big summer festivals in Czech Republic such as Rock For People, Trutnov Open Air or Mighty Sounds, touered Germany, Austria and Hungary. The band has played with many great independent bands such as The Misfits, The Adicts, Demented Are Go, The Peacocks, Peter Pan Speedrock, Maxeem, No Comply, Up To Vegas, Defience and others. Their first album called Cockain was released in May 2006.

Three rocksteady legends for the price of two

On saturday night on the Mighty Sounds' main stage, the Provokator crew witnessed 'Rocksteady Explosion', a concert featuring Pat Kelly and Dave Barker. Just remember the old rocksteady sounds from the 60's and 70's - cause yes, Mighty Sounds follows the comeback trend of Jamaican legends.

You might not know their names but both were born in Kingston at the end of the 40's, and are rocksteady masters. This term is refers to the musical period that preceded the explosion of reggae in Jamaica. Pat Kelly's "How long will it take" was the biggest-selling Jamaican single in 1969, opening doors of the leading musical Jamaican production companies, then directed by Lee Scratch Perry and Phil Pratt. Dave Barker, also produced by Perry, had his hour of glory with his song "Double Barrel", which topped English charts in 1971.

Still in relatively good shape, despite their 60 years, the two singers provided more than expected...not the greatest concert of the century, but enough to satisfy nostalgic rocksteady fans!

All the others probably preferred the opening of the concert, by Christopher Ellis, who showed us that reggae music is still very current. Christopher, son of rocksteady legend Alton Ellis, a father of this genre and sometimes considered the most popular Jamaican singer pre-Marley, used to go on stage with his father before his death in 2008. This young Londoner singer-songwriter gave a powerful and energetic opening; he made the audience dance and move - every last person including us!

La fine équipe de Provokator a assisté samedi soir, sur la grande scène de Mighty Sounds, au concert Rocksteady Explosition, "feat." Pat Kelly et Dave Barker. Histoire de se remémorer le vieux son rocksteady des années 60-70 - car oui, même Mighty Sounds suit la mode du come-back des légendes de Jamaïque.

Leurs noms ne vous disent peut être rien. Pourtant, tous deux nés à Kingston à la fin des années 40, maîtres du rocksteady - utilisez ce mot pour la période musicale précédant l'explosion du reggae en Jamaïque - ils ont tous les deux connu des succès notables. La chanson de Pat Kelly "How long will it take" a été le single jamaïcain le plus vendu en 1969, lui ouvrant les portes des grandes maisons de production jamaïcaines, alors dirigées par Lee Scratch Perry et Phil Pratt. Dave Barker, également produit par Perry, a connu la gloire avec sa chanson "Double Barrel", numéro un en Angleterre en 1971.

Toujours en relative forme malgré leurs 60 ans, les deux chanteurs ont assuré plus que le minimum ... pas le concert du siècle, mais au moins de quoi satisfaire les nostalgiques du rocksteady !

Les autres ont probablement préféré la première partie du concert, assurée par Christopher Ellis, qui nous a montré que le reggae est une musique encore bien actuelle. Christopher, fils de la légende du rocksteady Alton Ellis, un des pères du genre et parfois considéré comme le plus grand chanteur jamaïcain pré-Marley, accompagnait souvent son père sur scène avant sa mort en 2008. Ce jeune auteur-compositeur londonien a assuré une première partie puissante et énergique, il a su faire danser et bouger le public, tout le public, et même nous, pas grands spécialistes du rocksteady !

Lukáš Machalický and Jan Pfeiffer work with the topic of distance from two positions. Pfeiffer develops and reimagines ideas about distance and the city, using cartoon animation. Hošek draws upon a wide range of influences and inspiration, contemporary and historical, when constructing his paintings. Made using acrylic paint, applied meticulously onto canvas using hand cut stencils of masking tape, HoŠek's paintings have been described as illustrative, appearing to describe a complex narrative in a single comic-strip-like frame. It is precisely this spirit of post-teenage Pop which informs Hošek's strongly coloured and, through its collage-like comic elements, deliberately naive painting - stylish, cool and technically perfect. When Helena Ferenciková was 19 years old and in the throes of labor with her first child, she was told to sign a document. Only afterwards did she realize she had authorized her own sterilization. Eleven years previously, the same happened to Elena Gorolová. Both women are fighting for justice. Helena became the first Roma woman to win a case in Central Europe against the hospital that sterilized her in 2001. Elena addresses international audiences to ensure this never happens again. But Helena and Elena’s situations are a microcosm for the multiple sources of social injustice facing today’s Roma. Through their poignant and unnerving stories, this film unearths the shocking of the practice of forced sterilization thatboth women were forced to undergo.

Jestli napřed hrál se svým svým folk´n´roll projektem „Street Matadors" nebo s Falkonama sem nevypátral. On March 26, 2009, smack-dab in the middle of the Czech Republic’s turn to hold the EU temporary presidency, ex-Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek’s center-right coalition managed to meet its embarrassingly untimely demise. Despite holding the slimmest of majorities since 2006, few expected this fifth no-confidence vote to finally go through. Perhaps it came as a shock because multi-party governments by nature are prone to tenuous majorities; perhaps everyone has gotten a little too used to little or no change on all fronts.

From the moment the news broke, rumors, reasons and every combination of causes were given credit for what took place. Some were quick to point the finger at the global financial crisis and Topolanek’s mishandling of its effects on the country -- but Czech banks are not dependent on debt as in most other countries.

Local papers attributed the dissolution on Topolanek's attempt to quash a surfacing scandal regarding an ODS member’s alleged subsidy fraud. However, another source and parliamentary member revealed inside rumors about an unrealized Gentlemen’s Agreement between the two party heads. “Topolanek said that he would make Paroubek head of the parliament if he did not challenge him,” he claims. “Paroubek wanted to remind him of this agreement.”*

But the more important question and answer remains to be seen – what effect will this lack of governmental stability have on the Czech Republic’s image within the EU? Sarkozy’s initial concerns regarding the country’s commitment, organization and effectiveness echo in our ears, and nobody’s smiling wider than adamantly anti-EU Vaclav Klaus.

This victory was temporary, however, as cries against another endless stalemate came creeping back. So ODS hit the skids, he chose Czech Statistical Office head Jan Fischer to form a temporary government. For the second time in Czech history, it must be constituted of non-party members, and they have until May 9th to gain approval from the parliament.

Without Topolanek’s influence, the radar base is unlikely to happen anytime soon. And any hope of the Czech Republic signing the Lisbon Treaty will most probably have hinged upon the latter reaching out for help from the CSSD. Again, Klaus has been against this treaty since its inception, arguing that it takes power away from member states.

As far a loss of confidence on the part of the Czech electorate, rarely has any ruling party held an approval rating above 30%. As far as how these recent changes will affect the every day functionality of the government, another certain source at City Hall says that “the parliament will be the same, with members in [their] same positions.” He is also quick to claim that little control comes with the temporary EU presidency. “Everyone knows this is mostly symbolic and we cannot change big things.”

Pipes and Pints is more than a band. It’s a concept; Punk-rock and Highland bagpipes!
Their live act is an ass-kicking experience that will certainly lift up your mood and make your heads bang without even realizing it.

Health is an experimental band consisting of four members including Benjamin Jared Miller, Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Jupiter Keyes. All are from different cities including Seattle, San Diego, and Los Angeles, but their current home base is Los Angeles. Jake met Jupiter in college. John met Jake in a guitar store. Jared was drawn to the fold by way of Internet courtship. The band is oftentimes considered noise rock, but besides having some slight elements of the genre, they don’t fit the sound of other, current bands included in the noise rock scene, due to them mixing such genres as dance and electronica.

Filmed footage with mobile phone camera of Acke Praha: Riot Police, Anti-konflikt Police, Undercover Police, Photographer Police.....and the eventually the President of the Praha Police Department (who wore only a polyester gray striped shirt, he took a photo of himself and his grinning comrades with a mobile phone at the scene and I asked if he was the owner of the building...). Photographers Tereza Reichova and Jan Prerovsky were on the scene cooperatively covering the event with Marika Ley for Provokator.org and in conjunction with The Prague Post and SpinEarth.tv.

If you look to the far building on the right of the frame - the crowd is reacting to the squatters' personal property and belongings being tossed out the third floor windows by cooperate security. What was for 10 years once Squat Milada is being punched out from the inside by private security hired by the new owner of the building. The team of security arrived early in the morning without warning or even uniforms other than black clothing and shaved heads. Naturally an instant aversion to liberal minded underground types- they fought. a few found their way to the roof top and two managed to stay aloft which incited higher authorities attention. Eventually the pair were reasoned down with the promise of discussion at the Ministry offices. The result remains to be seen. Check for updates...

SURVIVOR REPORT FROM MIGHTY SOUNDS [VOL.6]:
THE MIGHTY WIND CAN’T QUELL THE MIGHTY SOUND

This past 16th till the 18th of June the Capuv Dvur airport near Tabor was the stomping ground for Mighty Sounds VOL.6. The program featured around 150 artists representing nearly every aspect of ska, punk, reggae, psychobilly, rock, jungle, breakbeat, drum and bass and other genres. Although the party on the second day started resembling more of an autumn happening, due to the poor weather conditions and rain, the music and the atmosphere were definitely a manifestation of summer helped by the dedicated crowd that kept going and demanding “Jeste jednu!!!”

The constant and horrid traffic jam when approaching Tabor on Friday afternoon prevented many to enjoy the full program of the day. Natives Queens of Everything made a great use of the Bandzone stage as it has a more intimate feel, something that their established local fans appreciated and new ones could experience. Ireland’s The Klingonz took over the Jan Zizka stage, showing what 22 years of experience looks like. Yes, it does look like a mad psychobilly circus with everything from fire breathing to unicycles, scored by the band’s musical classics. In the meanwhile, Irie Révoltés, from Germany, took their reggae/hip-hop blend a step further, mixing faster rhythms and different instruments, to progress everyone from swaying to jumping. Moreover the notable abilities of the MCs were acting as an instrument on their own, combining with their admirable energy, preventing those at the Jan Hus stage to pause at any point. Gore’n’ roll at Mighty Sounds 2010 was brought from France and represented by Banane Metalik who had one of the most marking shows at the festival. Investing a lot in visual presentation, all band members were in zombie makeup (and character) and for the full horror experience there was a performer, who danced, acted and handled a chainsaw to help get the point across. As the live music ended, it was time to carry on at the Sado-Maso DJ or Radio 1 DJ stages where the ones with most drive were, till the early hours, stepping to some breakbeat, electrohouse and drum and bass.

Saturday started off as a scorcher of a day, with people chasing after the festival’s fire truck to cool off a bit. The Jan Zizka stage opened with Czech Rocket Dogz who had a lively show and were one more manifestation of the health of the local scene. Slovak punk rock veterans Davova Psychoza showed how dedication can be recognized by the audience and were allowed to leave only after completing two encores filled with numbers from their discography encompassing twenty-one years of existence . As darker and darker clouds started hovering above Capuv Dvur, Prague’s Fast Food Orchestra had no problem keeping those that came to see them in a happy, skankin’ mood during their entire show. This is the type of band where every member has a blast when playing and transfers it to the viewers, who in return never fail in numbers or in stamina.

At around 7 p.m. all hell broke loose; the weather that was indecisive during the whole day finally chose to open the skies, reign down on thee and stuck with it for the next 14 hours. A benefit for the re-cheduled Church of Confidence from Berlin, impressive at uniting punk, psychobilly and rock on the sheltered area of the Bandzone stage. In addition their show, attracted members from local and foreign bands like Mad Sin, Frantic Flintstones, Born to Lose and others, which gave a special feel of community to it, which should be one of the main goals of events of this character. The Jan Hus stage was acting as an audience magnet as Spaniards Ska P kicked off their lively and immensely fun set. Festival visitors were thrilled to listen to A La Mierda , Cannabis and all the other hits by one of the worldwide most successful ska bands at the moment and it was evident that this band has followers in the region that were going out of control and singing along (or at least tried to) in Spanish. With no time to rest, the clock struck for psychobilly/rock 'n' roll favorites Mad Sin who were returning to Mighty Sounds for the second time. The band reached every-one's high expectations and justified the presence of the unfailing gathering, celebrating in the rain and wind, standing on what was now mud. Texans Born to Lose gave full respect to the committed who remained to see them and it resulted in a unforgettable punk rock moment, with a complete disregard of the storm or any kind of personal discomfort and a clear focus on the music.

Sunday introduced itself with grayness, gloominess and no sign of the constant down pour stopping. To Mighty Sounds 2010’s pleasure, slowly the rain was the first one to go, followed by brightening of the sky and a possible spotting of a ray of sun latter in the day. USA’s Sworn Enemy shook things up, with their harsh sound; the concoction of hardcore and metal was welcomed and responsible for a few muddy mosh-pits. The Jan Hus stage had the pleasure of hosting Russkaja’s vodka infused madness. Coming from Austria they managed to get festival goers immensely hyped about their Russian folk/ska sound and it reflected in one of the most energizing parties of the event. All girl band Civet, from California attracted a lot of interest and introduced their angry punk rock to the Czech audience, that was definitely paying attention to the lyrics and looks. Super Pilot, a monster constructed by Slovak, USA and Czech members, conquered the Bandzone stage and stirred up a lot of curiosity with their raw punk rock and unapologetic performance (not for the meek), gathering more and more fans as the performance progressed . American punk legends H2O, in no way took their status for granted, but instead showed how they earned it ;people singing along and screaming through every song, legitimizing the admiration they received and the level of knowledge the followers possessed about their discography. Irie Mafia from Hungary calmed the event, keeping a swaying atmosphere with their reggae/dancehall mix and viewers took pleasure in the soothing notes. The time to jump again was announced by Pipes and Pints’ bagpipe and the local Prague group used the great chance of playing the home turf to motivate the already exhausted visitors, at the dusk of the last hours of the three day festival, which made the crowd feel like it’s just the beginning.

For the most resilient of fest-ers the program continued till the early hours, containing Brazilian Victor Rice’s dub set on the Sado-Maso DJ set. Other entertainment included Shopsky Sound rakija flavored Balkan music with visuals provided by a very persistent girl trying to jump on stage, numerous times and the nicest security guard politely carrying her away on just as many occasions.

Mighty Sounds 2010 was a great place to see smaller and bigger bands in a more interpersonal environment than at massive festivals. Groups took the chance to get to know their fans, hung around to see other musicians and in many cases waited in the same line 25 minutes for a beer as everyone else. With a consistently strong line up through the past six years and an dedicated fan base (that is somewhat weatherproof) it would be terrific if these characteristics are kept and Mighty Sounds can continue to be an anchor for the ska/punk/reggae scene of the region.

Front Line Assembly are Bill Leeb (vocals, synthesizers) and Rhys Fulber (synthesizers and samplers), the best-known project undertaken by the prolific Vancouver, Canada-based duo. After working in the mid-’80s under the pseudonym Wilhelm Schroeder with Skinny Puppy, the Austrian-born Leeb formed the industrial/ebm-based Front Line Assembly in 1986 with Fulber — who initially joined on as a studio assistant — and synth player Michael Balch.

The 6th year of summer party Mighty Sounds will take place on 16.-18.7. 2010 on a new location Čápův dvůr in town of Tábor (about 80 K south from Prague)

The main reason for moving is that letter of grounds in Olší is after last year´s apocalyptic rain, connected with its disastrous impact on premises, not very keen on idea of having the festival on the same place one more time. Other also important reason, is that from the promoters point of view it was no longer bearable to organize a festival of such size on a place, which is that vulnerable when it comes to bad weather. It took last year´s mud bath only couple of minutes to wash away from Earth surface whole year´s work and take it to river Styx.

Well of course there is a special relationship to Olší and it´s not easy for us to leave it, but on the other hand, we think, that grassy surface of airport in Tábor is more then adequate substitution which, in case of heavy rain will not spoil the visitors, bands and also us, promoters, music experience. It´s easily accessible, flat, with drainage that prevents it from becoming an impenetrable trap in case of bad weather

We'd like to invite you for the July Prague Critical Mass Ride that takes
place on Thursday, July 15th, at 6pm. The ride starts from our traditional
meeting place in front of the church at Jiří z Poděbrad square in Vinohrady.
The bike convoy would go eastwards along the Vinohradská street to turn to
the right at Želivského, pass by Ruská street and then through Vršovice back
to the Bohemians football stadium where we turn left and continue up the
hill via Pražského povstání to Děkanka from where we go back down to the
river in Dvorce. The final part of the ride leads us to the newly opened
citybikers' community center called Bajkazyl (Bike asylum) on the right

By philosophy and nature, Jan Kaplický was mainly an architect, but his typical creative touch can be seen in many other artistic disciplines. His buildings are definitely outstanding and controversial; he was often inspired by natural forms – cobwebs, butterfly’s wings, or fish scales. Kaplický received many awards, including the most prestigious British award for architecture, the Stirling Prize, for the Media Centre at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Kaplický’s most recent designs include the Antonín Dvořák Congress and Concert Hall Centre in České Budějovice.
When Jan Kaplický gave a lecture in Prague several years ago, he enumerated ten guiding principles of his work. They are as follows: freedom, creativity, people, beauty, elegance, plasticity, sensuality, color, innovation, and inspiration. This exhibition will finally allow the public to become acquainted with Kaplický’s oeuvre, at least in retrospective.
Jan Kaplický attained fame with two iconic buildings, namely the Media Centre at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London and the Selfridges department store in Birmingham, but the Czech public knows him mainly for his winning design in the competition for the National Library, as well as the controversy that followed. The exhibition will open concurrently with the release of a film about his life into Czech movie theaters.
“Jan Kaplický: His Own Way” is intended to present the personality and work of the artist in the broadest context, from architectural models to jewelry and fashion.

On July the 6th at Festival Park near Hradec Kralove, Rock for People 2010 concluded with the final day and despite the gloomy and cold weather with occasional rainfall, festival goers had a sizzling schedule to attend. The rain did not impede Death by Stereo’s loyal fans and the reward was an invitation to join the band on stage. In the middle of the mayhem, Death by Stereo’s singer Efrem Schulz contributed to security’s nightmare and the bliss of those up on the scene, by shouting: “Keep playing, they’re gonna f*cking shut us down so keep playing!” On the same stage 45 minutes later it was time for Britain’s Gallows who immediately exploded on stage marking their presence with their sheer raw attitude and powerful aggression. Confirming their allegiance to chaos they soon had the spectators engaged in the largest circle pit of the festival , followed by a wall of death, that divided the crowd in two parts only to join it by running and slamming into each-other, and culminating with a demand for a human pyramid by notorious frontman Frank Carter

who explained it to the Czech audience as: “a f*cking pyramid, made of f*cking humans, you f*cking retards!” Subsequently British electro-rockers Does it Offend You, Yeah? turned the Česká Spořitelna Stage into a massive dance floor, offering a somewhat different sound than most of the musical genres featured at Rock for People 2010. Horkyze Slize from Slovakia enjoyed an enormous turnout and provided an entertaining 50 minutes in which they played diverse material from their extensive discography. Next on the repertoire were The Subways, using all their experience with preforming live, giving one of the most engaging shows at the festival,sparing neither themselves, nor the audience. Billy Lunn, vocals and guitar, made sure that there was not one single indifferent person at their concert, as he stage dived and coordinated massive singalongs to some of their biggest hits such as: Rock & Roll Queen, Shake! Shake! and I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say. For the second time this week, Billy Talent from Canada were playing in the Czech Republic, now on the T-Music Stage. Every song beginning was followed by screams and it was obvious, that for those that gathered Red Flag, Devil On My Shoulder and Rusted From The Rain are already classics in their view.

The proximate spotlight was on UK’s alt indie The Editors and it seemed as almost an intermezzo from the festival, with their spellbinding melodies and considerably calmer mood. The followers were utterly completely captivated by the music; the overall atmosphere bore resemblance to a religious ritual, supported by the dedicated musical execution of the group. At the same time, on the Evropa 2 Stage, as perfect contrast, locals Pipes and Pints were playing and as usual their fans were going crazy to the blend of bagpipes and punk rock. The time was drawing near for one of the most anticipated acts at Rock for People ; when NOFX finally began to play the real anarchy was unleashed. Even among the last hours of the four day long event (and by all natural laws the crowd should not have been far from collapsing), NOFX frontman, Fat Mike and the rest of the assembly seemed to work up adrenaline for the mass melee.

Mellow meandering Morcheeba was the perfect way to end the night. Skye Edwards proved to be a wonderful live vocalist and the band’s work was incredibly appropriate to conclude the 96 hours of the festival and in addition to bring the most diverse music fans together. Rock for People introduced some truly amazing bands and did not allow a single dull moment. The standard for next year has been set so it will be exciting to see what Rock for People 2011 will bring.

1. Café Bar Propaganda – Pštrossova 29, Prague 1Ce formidable petit bar proche du Théâtre National est toujours plein d’habitués et on y trouve même quelques célébrités locales (à ce qu’on raconte, je ne suis pas spécialiste en personnalités tchèques !)

L’endroit est petit, mais cela ajoute plutôt à son charme. Cet endroit animé a aussi une atmosphère très sympathique. Il peut être bondé aux heures de pointe, notamment parce que les touristes avisés et les locaux au budget serré arrivent tôt.
La bière coûte trois fois rien et il propose une longue liste de cocktails abordables (les plus dangereux sont à base d’absinthe) pour ceux qui ne sont pas fans de bière.
En principe l’endroit ferme à 2h du matin, mais le bar est connu pour rester ouvert bien plus tard quand il y a foule !
C’est un endroit formidable pour commencer la soirée avant de sortir en boite ou juste pour boire un verre dans un environnement sympa.

2. Boulder Bar- V Jámě 6, Prague 1Boulder bar est différent dans la mesure où il a son propre mur d’escalade! Faites un peu de sport histoire de vous donner soif, puis allez au bar pour descendre des bières. Vous pouvez faire les choses dans l’autre sens bien entendu (ça c’est déjà vu !) mais ce n’est évidemment pas idéal.

On y trouve essentiellement des gens du coin et la vaste majorité sont des grimpeurs enthousiastes, mais ne vous laissez pas intimider si vous n’êtes pas un spécialiste de la varappe, car l’équipe sympathique est toujours heureuse de vous montrer les bases.
Le Boulder Bar est ouvert de 10h à minuit la semaine et de midi à minuit le weekend.

3. Lucerna Café- Vodičkova 36, Prague 1Situé dans l’un des plus fameux passages de Prague, Lucerna Café se trouve juste derrière la légendaire statue Cerny de St Wenceslas chevauchant un cheval mort à l’envers.

C’est l’endroit parfait pour savourer une bière glacée en regardant les passants et en admirant la magnifique architecture du bâtiment Art Nouveau qui vous abrite.
Lucerna n’est pas le bon endroit pour s’éclater toute la nuit ou pour commencer la soirée – les bières ne comptent pas parmi les moins chères de la ville et l’atmosphère est plutôt calme et sophistiquée – mais il vaut le détour, ne serait-ce que pour son emplacement et la beauté de ce qui vous entoure !
Le Café est ouvert de 10h à minuit.

4. U Fleku- Kremencova 11, Prague 1A une courte marche du centre ville, U Fleku offre tout ce que vous pouvez espérer d’un bar : bière, nourriture, musique live et divertissement de type cabaret, le tout sous le même toit ! Il a même sa propre brasserie et son propre musée sur place !

Avant tout, c’est un vrai bar fréquenté par des gens du cru et des voyageurs dégustant la fantastique bière brassée sur le site.
La nourriture y est aussi délicieuse, vous pourrez goûter des spécialités tchèques à base de canard, porc, goulasch et saucisses, servies avec du choux, des pommes de terre et des quenelles de farine ou de pomme de terre. Le jarret de porc fait notamment l’unanimité auprès des clients.
C’est vraiment un endroit à visiter à Prague et vous aurez du mal à quitter cet endroit à l’ambiance fantastique, où vous pourrez assister régulièrement à des récitals d’accordéon et à des interprétations de chansons traditionnelles tchèques par des personnes en état d’ébriété !

5. Jazz Dock- Janáčkovo nábřeží 2, PragueSi vous voulez un peu de jazz pour accompagner votre bière, dirigez-vous vers Jazz Dock, dans Prague 5.

Jazz Dock est l’un des bars jazz les plus récents de la ville, et c’est aussi l’un des meilleurs.
Il bénéficie d’un formidable emplacement au bord de l’eau, et d’un design original, avec un mur de verre dans lequel se reflète l’immense bar, très impressionnant de nuit.
L’entrée coûte trois fois rien : 150 CZK (un peu plus de 5,5 euros) pour la plupart des spectacles et juste 90 CZK (3,5 euros) si vous avez moins de 25 ans. Les prix des boissons sont également raisonnables pour une salle de jazz, avec des bières à partir de 35 CZK (un peu moins d’1,5 euro). Il y a aussi une liste décente d’alcools à essayer, parmi lesquels on compte bien sûr de l’absinthe.
Les concerts de jazz commencent généralement à 22h et sont souvent suivis de jam sessions qui durent jusque tard dans la nuit. Il y a deux concerts les vendredis et samedis, et des spectacles Dixie ont lieu tous les dimanches.
Si vous venez pour un concert, il est conseillé de réserver en avance, car, comme toutes les bonnes adresses de Prague, l’endroit est bondé aux heures de pointe.

6. Kino Svetozor- Vodickova 41, Prague 1Un bar souterrain dans un cinéma, voilà un incontournable pour les fans du grand écran ! Petit et cosy, ce bar est l’endroit parfait pour se poser en attendant votre séance au cinéma situé juste au-dessus.

Cela dit, vous n’êtes pas obligé d’avoir un ticket de cinéma pour aller boire une bière dans ce bar, qui fait aussi office de galerie, où vous pourrez admirer des photos. Certains des photographes les plus prometteurs de la ville sont exposés ici et ce bar vous offre une opportunité unique de vous cultiver entre deux bières.
Le cinéma du dessus est plutôt de type art et essai, et la programmation comprend plus de films artistiques et de festivals que de superproductions américaines.
Le bar est ouvert de 12h30 à 23h du lundi au vendredi et de 10h30 à 23h le weekend.

7. Pivovarský klub- Křižíkova 17, Prague 8La République Tchèque est renommée pour la qualité de ses bières, et certaines des meilleures bières du monde y sont brassées. De grandes marques internationales, telles que Pilsner et Budvar y sont produites et beaucoup considèrent Prague comme la capitale des buveurs de bière.

Si Prague est la capitale des buveurs de bière, alors Pivovarský klub est son palais, car il offre l’une des plus vastes sélections de bières de la capitale. 6 différents types de bières pression sont proposés et changent toutes les semaines. Vous y trouverez de vraies raretés, qui n’atteindront jamais votre supermarché local. De plus, sa carte de bières en bouteille couvre 6 continents.
Ce n’est pas l’endroit idéal pour boire un verre de vin dans une ambiance tranquille, mais si vous êtes fan de bière, vous serez aux anges ! Vous pouvez même goûter des plats à base de bière, notamment des crêpes au beurre de bière !

8. The Pub- Veleslavínova 3, Prague 1The Pub offre une expérience unique en son genre ! Chaque table a sa propre tireuse à bière et est reliée au bar afin de pouvoir suivre votre consommation et la comparer à celle des autres tables.

The pub lui-même est relié aux autres pubs de la chaine et les statistiques des différents établissements apparaissent sur un tableau d’affichage qui devient de plus en plus difficile à comprendre au fur et à mesure que la soirée avance !
La compétition assure une animation permanente et le concept est à essayer si vous aimez boire de la bière par tonneaux.
De la nourriture est également proposée, et bien que les prix ne soient pas si abordables, on ne peut que vous conseiller de manger un morceau si vous avez prévu de prendre le challenge au sérieux.
The Pub est ouvert du lundi au jeudi de 11h à 2h du matin, de 11h à 3h du matin le vendredi et de midi à 3h du matin les samedis et dimanches.

9. U Vystřelenýho oka- U Božích bojovníků 3, Prague 3

U Vystřelenýho oka est un bar rock, donc bruyant et un tantinet « rustique » qui n’est pas idéal pour les non-fumeurs, les amateurs de bon vin et les personnes raffinées.
Parmi la clientèle on compte plutôt des buveurs de bière, des fans de rocks, des musiciens et des gens qui aiment faire la fête, et l’endroit est toujours plein à craquer les soirs de concert. Vous pourrez à peine bouger et l’endroit est très enfumé, mais l’ambiance est incroyable.
Le prix des bières est très raisonnable et des plats tchèques classiques sont proposés pour trois fois rien.
En été, vous pourrez aussi profiter du jardin à l’arrière de l’établissement, mais ne négligez pas l’intérieur, qui présente beaucoup d’œuvres d’art surréaliste de l’artiste Martin Velíšek, natif de la ville, ainsi que des t-shirts, des cartes postales-menu rigolotes et des cendriers au design élaboré.
Heures d’ouverture : de 16h30 à 1h du matin du lundi au samedi.

10. Vinárna U Sudu- Vodickova 10, Prague 1Ce fantastique bar à vin est l’un des secrets les mieux gardés de Prague, bien qu’il se trouve dans l’une des rues les plus animées de la ville, à un jet de pierre de la Place Wenceslas.

Cet établissement ne paie pas de mine de l’extérieur, il ressemble aux autres petits bars à vin. Cependant, si vous vous aventurez à l’intérieur c’est un régal et l’endroit est immense.
Il y a une salle à droite du bar avec un piano que vous pouvez utiliser à votre guise et une salle babyfoot où vous pouvez défier les habitants du coin autour d’une bière.
Mais c’est au sous-sol que se trouve la meilleure partie. La cave médiévale ressemble à un labyrinthe rempli de salles et de tables disposées dans tous les sens.
L’escalier est plutôt raide et vous auriez sûrement la flemme de remonter chercher un verre, mais heureusement ils ont pensé à tout et deux autres bars ont été installés au sous-sol histoire de vous simplifier la vie.
Ce bar peut accueillir jusqu’à 300 personnes, ce qu’on a du mal à croire de l’extérieur. Comme quoi les apparences peuvent être trompeuses ! Ce bar est toujours ouvert tard et c’est un bon endroit pour passer la soirée après une journée de visites à Prague.

Adrian T. Bell, who is primarily known as a musician and the frontman of The Prostitutes, presents yet another creative personality; this time, a painter.

For his exhibition" Play", Bell has prepared twenty-five oils and acrylics on canvass linked with a single common factor – play. “Playing and the need for playfulness is one of the essential human needs. Cubs and humans alike learn through games– and a toy is one of the first objects we do perceive. So, to give you an example, the first frog I remember was a clockwork toy,” Bell says, adding: “I also love seeing common objects and illuminating them differently to make them beautiful.”

His large-scale bright-coloured canvasses portray child-like inflatable dolphins, clockwork chickens - as well as daily objects taken out of their usual context, such as a set of meter tall lighters or hot dogs.

Adrian T.Bell comes from Newcastle, England, trained as a navigation officer and spent five years in the Royal Fleet Auxilliary, supplying ships for the Royal Navy. Later, he majored in landscape architecture in Manchester. After spending a ceveral years in the Caribbean and in Greece, Bell finally settled in Prague. Five years ago, he, accompanied by his four friends founded The Prostitutes, a band which took an inseparable part of the Czech music scene. Their second album Hometown Zombies, was awarded Album of the Year 2009 by Filter magazine, and is currently being released in the United Kingdom and Germany.

The exhibition will take place on 15^th June, starting at 7 p.m.

On the first weekend of July, 1 .-3. 7., will the festival celebrate its 12^th anniversary. For this reason RealBeat is the biggest and oldest reggae festival in Czech Republic. The country is known for its great atmosphere. You can smoke your spliff in peace, enjoy cheap beer and listen to great music, all this for just 20Euro.

The line up is this year extraordinary. On stage will perform Toots & The Maytals. The legend from Jamaica gave with the song “Do the Reggay” to the whole genre its name and is according to the magazine “Rolling Stone” one of the best 100 singers of the history. Toots Hibberts got the Grammy for the best reggae album of the year. He is a veteran in the music business, but sill full of energy on stage.

For all the dancehall fans: the second headliner on the RealBeat festival will be T.O.K.! The charming quartet is performing with their band 303Band. The Jamaican boy group is with all their energy and hits a guaranteed activator for dancing.

But that’s of course not all! Directly from England are coming General Levy, Top Cat, Deadly Hunta and Mungo’s Hi-Fi with their own sound system.

From Venezuela is the ska-band Sin Sospechas coming, the EU Reggae Contest Winner for Denmark Mystic MC with the band Budapest band, and from Germany the singer U-cee & Royal Family.

Also bands from Czech Rebublic are performing. Did you hear already something of Sto zvířat, Švihadlo, Fast Food Orchestra or Mr. Cocoman & Solid Vibez? No? Then it’s maybe time.

This are the headliner for the live stage. But the live stage is just one of 5!!

There will be also a Dancehall Yard, Mungo’s Hi-Fi Dubstation, a Rootsreggae corner and Latino stage, with a lot of reggaeton.

16th annual Mystic Sk8 Cup 2010 is again a part of the World Cup Skateboarding (WCS) contest series. This event is traditionally one of the most popular summer holiday events in Prague and professional riders consider it the best contest in Europe.

From Friday 2nd until Sunday 4th of July, the world’s top riders will compete for $30.000 prize money in two main contests – street and bowl, designed by skateboarding legends Dave Duncan, Brian Patch and Radek Teichmann. After the final, all competitions will culminate in the popular best trick contest where riders attempt extreme tricks, which are for their difficulty not seen during the standard competition.

Streetstyle course and spectator seating are covered by a huge mobile roofing system and, thanks to support of the City of Prague, the pool has a roofing system as well.

The contest will also be open to girls, who will compete for $2.500 in the streetstyle contest.

As every year, our first priority is satisfaction of our riders. The contest is very popular with visitors too – every year we have over 10000 of them. As every year, we have updated our skate park according to latest trends in the sport to motivate riders to performances that push the limits of skateboarding.

Mystic Sk8 Cup will again host the best riders of current skateboarding in all three contests. As in past years, we expect to greet approximately 150 professional riders from cca 25 countries, including the world’s best from USA, Brazil, Australia and Europe.

Czech skateboarding will be represented by best 20 riders, qualified according to their current standing in the Czech Sk8 Cup series. For most of them, this will be a priceless first experience of competing alongside the world’s best skaters.

On Friday, the competition will start with amateur rider pre-qualifiers, best 20 will advance to Saturday’s qualifying. The contest is managed according to the rules of the World Cup Skateboarding office, which compiles the results and supplies the judges. Competition results are included in the World Cup Sk8 rankings.

This year, we will again present a schedule of supporting events which will include live music performances, DJs, various workshops and stalls with skateboard equipment. Bands will this year include Artery, Sunshine, DJs…

An integral part of the event are our spectators and supporters, both local and from all over the world, who thanks to their perfect understanding of skateboarding create every year our unique atmosphere.

Deftones are an American rock band from Sacramento, California formed in 1988, consisting of Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chi Cheng (bass), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion).

While they were mostly considered as a nu metal band in their early years, their sound progressively evolved into something more complex and experimental, as a result they are often coined today as an alternative metal band.

Critics have often praised them as one of the closest to unique rock bands of recent years for their innovative, atmospheric music; as Johnny Loftus writes, “Rock critics usually reserve a special place for Deftones above or at least away from the rest of the turn-of-the-century metal movement […] Deftones have always seemed more curious, more willing to incorporate traditionally revered sounds like dream pop into their Northern California alt-metal.”

Frontman Chino Moreno’s poetic lyrics—described by a Time magazine critic as “fiercely intelligent”—are often evocative, yet are sparse enough to allow for multiple interpretations. Moreno has cited Morrissey, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, The Cure’s Robert Smith, and Depeche Mode’s David Gahan among his favorite singers, and beyond an occasional similarity in vocal technique, these singers’ sweeping sense of drama and delicate vulnerability is often evident in Moreno’s vocals and has often been likened to that of Daryl Palumbo(glassjaw).

High Tone was formed in the year 1997 in the city of Lyon, France. The idea and leitmotiv of the musicians were to mix the traditional dub music with their others musical influences such as drum’n’bass, hip-hop or oriental music. For the first time in Prague you can see a remarkable Swedish cathartic post-industrial projec IRM from a well-known label Cold Meat Industry (http://www.coldmeat.se) whose leader Roger Karmanik performs here with his famous death industrial project BRIGHTER DEATH NOW. Moreover you can enjoy an impressive experimental dark-voiced ambient project VOID OV VOICES run by the multi-active vocalist Attila Csihar, best known for his vocal in a legendary black metal band Mayhem. Romanian project NARKOLEPTIK could be a nice surprise of the festival’s evening for it’s not so wide-spread but really amazing fusion of gloomy dark ambient and raw industrial music. Finally you can look forward to seeing here also an interesting expressive electronic project DARKRAD of a Russian DJ Jana Dark.

SLAYER PAVILION is pleased to present "Room 1983: Some Text Missing" by the project's founding artists David Dorrell, Melissa Frost and Mihda Koray running as a shadow event to the 6th Berlin Biennial.

"Room 1983: Some Text Missing" concentrates its attention on the obscured subtexts of late Cold War era pop music and its relationship to the then-emerging medium of the music video, where meanings that were often masked in, or even removed from the texts of songs - as alleged in the case of Corey Hart's hit single "Sunglasses at Night" - were expressed. Basing itself in the visual language of these music videos, "Room 1983: Some Text Missing" investigates the objects and forms that were transformed into signs to express pre- "historical 1984" fears of total nuclear war and totalitarian states: dark and sparse rooms, prison bars both real and suggested, and the black sunglasses that came to stand for a uniform that both reduced personal individuality and obscured the literal and metaphorical means of seeing. Giving additional consideration to other forms of cultural expression of anxiety, annihilation fear, and things going missing, "Room 1983: Some Text Missing," alongside a limited edition book produced as a partner piece to the exhibition, examines the myth of the Bermuda Triangle, itself a legend born and popularized in the era of the Cold War.

All visitors to "Room 1983: Some Text Missing" will be required to wear uniform black sunglasses that will be provided at the door of STYX Project Space.

A limited edition book produced by the artists, also titled "Some Text Missing," will be available for sale at the exhibition.

Founded in 2007 by David Dorrell, Melissa Frost and Mihda Koray, SLAYER PAVILION is an art space created in response to the prevailing art biennial and art fair cultures. A conceptual museum in a sense, SLAYER PAVILION is an ever-evolving theoretical structure consisting of "Rooms" curated or created by the artists involved, which should be viewed neither as individual or group exhibitions, but rather as temporary presentations of fractions of the greater dialogue housed within the theoretical structure of SLAYER PAVILION. Drawing inspiration from forgotten or marginalized histories and pop cultures, SLAYER PAVILION seeks to examine the margins of our culture so that we can live a "modern future" where, in the words of Raymond Williams in his 1987 lecture "When Was Modernism?," "community may be imagined again."

This is the 2nd presentation of SLAYER PAVILION, The previous SLAYER PAVILION, titled "Room 88: Dying Dreamer," was presented at URA Gallery, Istanbul in 2007.

Your Story and Mine: Personal History and the Arts as Tools for Empowerment and Social Inclusion@ American Center

Martha A. Bloomfield, will talk and show a film about “Your Story and Mine: Personal History and the

Arts as Tools for Empowerment and Social Inclusion” an innovative, multi-faceted arts program designed
to give voice to current and formerly homeless adults in Michigan. This special program provides an
opportunity for self-expression through personal history stories, art, poetry, photographs and song to
create an inclusive society. The Michigan Historical Museum, a state history museum, created an
innovative partnership with Advent House Ministries, a day shelter for those people whose lives were
most fragmented struggling with poverty and homelessness, to discover and share their life stories. The
program used literacy and the building blocks of history—personal stories, artifacts, historic documents
and family photographs—and the arts as tools for those most at risk of losing their identity in the
community. This project was funded by the Michigan Humanities Council and supported by the Friends of
Michigan History.
Ilja Hradecký, will speak about the 20-year-long tradition of the organization’s social work following
social and political changes in the Czech Republic. Naděje works in Prague and several other cities with
homeless and other socially excluded and vulnerable groups. He will expand on the development and
advancement of assistance to the homeless, about professional training of social workers and exploring
life histories. The talk will also feature screening of a documentary film Place of Residence: Prague
(directed by Ivo Bystřičan).
The seminar will be accompanied by an exhibition of thematic photographs by Jan Přerovský.
The seminar will be interpreted into Czech and English.

My name is Damien Mitchell, I was born on the 27th of October, 1985. I was raised in Wagga Wagga, Australia. I moved to Prague with my sister and started painting stencils in an abandoned merto station on the outskirts of town. Without formal education, I am self taught and apply my own style and technique to create unique works that reflect the world around me. The Whitest Boy Alive @ Palac Akropolis

Monday the 14^th of June, Palac Akropolis hosted Berlin’s well respected The Whitest Boy Alive and their fans in Prague. The band's brand of music is hard to categorize, combining elements of electro, pop, indie and funk. Since their start in 2003 The Whitest Boy Alive have released two albums and as singer Erlend Oye, mentioned, "toured the world from Jakarta to South America", former Kings of Convenience guitarist also declared to the exuberant Prague Crowd he was glad to be back in Prague- the crowd was thrilled!

When going to see a band that plays atmospheric music there is always the danger that despite the quality of the music it might be dull. This is what sets The Whitest Boy Alive apart from other similar bands of the similar genre their enormous capacity to entertain. During the show's 90 minute musical manna communication between crowd and band was flawless. The superb musicianship that bassist Oz, drummer Maschat and keyboardist Nentwig possess, in conjunction with the inventive techniques which they approach their instruments, contributes to the quality of their recorded material and in this case; wildly entertaining to watch. Further Oye’s voice,which sounds even better live, has a major impact to their sound and did its part in subliminally hypnotizing those present.

Oye demanded participation from the devotees - happy to sing along and dance to every song among which were the favorites 1571 and Burning . At one point in the evening he even jumped in the crowd and partied with everyone, which only served to confirm his status as one of the most beloved frontmen out there today. Needless to say that turned the show from an indie concert into a dance-rave where being idle was just not an option.

The Whitest Boy Alive serve as a reminder of the importance of live shows as a channel for connecting musicians with their fans and vice versa. ;all members have the ability of making it seem like they are playing to each and every individual in the room. The next concert will probably be underlined by the same feeling of intimacy and if you were in Akropolis that evening, you most likely cannot wait for it!
