ImageSketches from the civil war in Bosnia, 1992

By Milana Milošević

Generally, you live your life without thinking that in just one day something can happen that will change your perspective, will change your day-to-day behavior, and change the way you cope in general…One day in 1992, Sarajevo’s citizens awoke to that scenario and found themselves surrounded by the heavy weapons of their own army. Suddenly, nothing else mattered except day-to-day survival…

Sabahudin is standing in the garden, at the back of his building; he is holding two buckets to collect rainwater so that he and his family can wash themselves. He will need much more than just these two buckets to wash off the soap, because rain is softer than drinking water and has fewer minerals. He has to fill up the whole bathtub, and he lives with his family on the 11th floor. There is no electricity so the elevator does not work. Afterwards, he will have to go and collect drinking water from three blocks away to ensure water reserves for the week to come.

A couple of streets away, sniper shots echo… somebody is lying on the street, crying for help. Ana is eighteen years old. She is just finishing high school and plans to study architecture. It is early in the morning, and she was on her way to one of the charity headquarters to collect her rations of flour, sugar and milk powder. The ambulance came, but they could not save her because the hospital did not have all the medication needed.

Twelve tram stations from the sniper-shot girl, there are five children ranging in age from five to twelve, playing in the garden. It is a peaceful morning. Suddenly, the grenade lands. Four of them lie dead. The fifth lost both his legs.

In the same neighbored, a couple of hours later, a certain male, Milutin rapes a certain female, Esma, in the basement of their building.
She kept the baby.
