Participate, do it yourself, do it better!

The 12th Fuckparade starts August 9th, 2 pm at the Michaelkirchbrücke in Mitte, Berlin. This year the demonstration is driving against property development, for the sake of the Schwarzer Kanal, Köpi, New Yorck and the Bethanien, as well as against police repression, drug hysteria and gentrification.

Fuckparade, shortened from Fuck Love Parade, is an annual march taking place in Berlin, originally formed in 1997 to resist the increasing commercialisation and restrictiveness of Love Parade, a festival that's sponsorship deals and music restrictions pushed many participants away. Fuckparade is a subculture movement characterised by gabba and hardcore techno music (which were removed from Love Parade), aimed at enhancing cultural diversity, avoiding commercialisation and, since 2001 clashes with the Berlin Senate, preserving free means of expression in demonstration.

This year the main point of protest is the proposed plans of Media Spree, a real-estate developer hoping to construct on the Spree riverbed. Locals against the development have already put together a petition that led to a referendum on July 13: Nearly 87 percent of the constituents voted to leave the riverbanks as they are. But now city politicians are getting involved, discussing financial ramifications to the city if the project is halted, and it’s unclear what exactly will happen. Fuckparade hopes to drum up yet more resistance; with numbers close to 5000 taking to the streets in 2007, it should be another large demonstration.

Expect floats accompanying the protest, playing music including gabba and a range of hardcore styles, electro, live acts and more, all accompanied by a lively collection of characters suited to the subversively diverse aims of the day.
