Every dog has his day – even one-eyed, three-legged mangy mutts that would take being labelled the runt of the litter as a compliment.

Pug-ugly Gus, a Chinese crested dog, took first place at the world's ugliest dog contest on Saturday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.

Some critics have derided the world's ugliest dog contest for being little more than an animal freakshow, while supporters have claimed it goes a long way to champion pets that would otherwise go unregarded.

Indeed, many of the competitors having previously suffered neglect before being rescued from animal homes - Gus lost an eye after a fight with a cat and had his leg amputated because of a tumour.

Just as long as the pups don't start wearing bikinis to turn the judges' heads...
